Join Glenn Keller and Member Engagement Director Tori Harper Mercado for a discussion on how a background in the arts can be advantageous in STEM careers and how we can encourage the addition of the arts from youth by putting the A in STEAM! The extra “A” (for Arts) expands the STEM doctrines of hands-on investigation and include process-driven inquiry to include design, creativity, and iteration. STEAM also emphasizes valuable soft skills like communication, collaboration, and innovation. One study of of high-level employees in leadership positions, such as chief executives and product engineers, found that only 37 percent of these individuals had degrees in engineering or computer technology. The remaining 63 percent had degrees in a wide range of fields, including business and the arts and humanities. So, this begs the question, how do these “softer” degrees translate into STEM careers?
