I met Anshu roughly four months back and heard his story. What stuck with me the most was his passion to solve for one of the most marginalised communities in #India. I clearly remember him sharing about his time during his Master’s in #Chennai. Inside a government institution, construction workers were denied clean water to drink or bathe. These workers resorted to bathing in the Cooum —one of the most polluted water bodies in #Chennai— leaving them with rashes all over their bodies. Anshu, mobilised his peers from college, and pushed back against the administration and ensured that the workers got a regular supply of water. It was a small but powerful fight—a glimpse into what collective action can achieve even within rigid systems. But Anshu soon realised this was just the tip of the iceberg. This wasn’t an isolated incident but a symptom of a deeper, more insidious problem—systemic oppression. His journey took him to #Rohtas in Bihar, 2,000 kilometers from Chennai, where he witnessed an even grimmer reality: the plight of brick kiln communities. These communities, trapped in what Anshu calls modern-day slavery, are up against large mafias and entrenched systems of exploitation. Within a 100-meter radius of a brick kiln, you witness all the developmental issues—education, health, livelihood, sanitation and others. It’s a fight against a deeply rooted system, and Anshu has taken it head-on by founding Neev ki Eent Foundation (NkEF). He is on a mission to educate and empower these communities, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to fight for their rights. One of the things I’ve committed to, in my limited capacity, is to rally support for organizations like Anshu’s. While major cities often get a lion’s share of funding, smaller organizations in states like #Bihar often struggle the most. This #Diwali, I’m inviting you to be part of this fight. The world is reeling from a relentless onslaught of violence and injustice. From the devastating wars in Ukraine and Gaza to the recent political unrest in the UK and the horrific rape-murder of a young doctor in India, it's becoming increasingly difficult to bear witness to such suffering. But what compounds this frustration is the growing sense of fear surrounding open dialogue. Expressing opinions on these events, even to condemn violence or injustice, can lead to being canceled or misunderstood. It raises a haunting question: Are human rights and free speech truly universal, or just tools of control? Are we to accept narratives fed to us, or dare to seek our own truth? In a world where information is manipulated and dissenting voices are silenced, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and powerless. In the face of such global chaos and turmoil, I am growing stronger in my belief that only love and compassion, both for others and ourselves, can lead us back to the light. So, with this in mind, I stepped out tonight to feed some of the many homeless dogs that roam my neighborhood here in Sri Lanka. While the thought of children dying under the rubble as I sleep safely is devastating, I refuse to be paralyzed by it. Even small acts of kindness, like feeding these dogs or sending a donation to a charity, remind me again that compassion is a choice we can and should always make. #HumanRights #FreedomOfSpeech #GlobalUnrest #Truth #Compassion #Justice #Hope

This morning, I came across a story that truly shook me. A young boy was unable to afford even a train ticket, hid beneath a train to travel to Jabalpur. When authorities discovered him, his only explanation was heartbreaking: “I don’t have money.” This incident is a stark reminder of the harsh inequalities in our country. On one hand, we see people flexing their wealth—spending extravagantly on luxuries and flaunting their lifestyle on social media. On the other hand, there are individuals who don’t even have the basic resources to survive or travel safely. How can we, as a society, let this coexist? When did we become so comfortable with turning a blind eye to those in need? We need to ask ourselves some hard questions: - Are we doing enough to support the underprivileged? - Can we realign our priorities to make a meaningful impact on someone else’s life? This is not about guilt; it’s about awareness and action. Let’s start small—help a child with education, donate food, or even spread kindness. Together, we can bridge this gap. **Let’s create a version of India where no one has to risk their life under a train because of poverty.**

Selfless service (or in Hindi - #seva) is a guiding principle in my life. I feel so fortunate to work for a company that also values service to others, particularly by coordinated efforts both financially and through volunteerism, to support our local non-profits. The WNBL is proud to present the third annual Fighting Period Poverty Round, an initiative devoted to shining a light on period poverty in Australia, encouraging open and honest discussions about menstruation, and supporting communities by providing vital menstrual products to those in need. Period poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand-washing facilities and waste management. It is an issue that greatly affects the unemployed, university and TAFE students, homeless people, those displaced due to domestic violence and the LGBTQIA+ community.
