I recently had a Zoom coffee chat with a friend who is working at a really well-known nonprofit, and they mentioned that their organization isn’t ready for a more “chill” approach to social media (and was a point of frustrating especially as we see how social is changing) Here’s what I told them to say: A “chill” approach doesn’t mean unprofessional; it means human. It means: 1. Audiences today—especially younger ones—connect with authenticity, not perfection. 2. Dropping the jargon and speaking like a person, not a press release. 3. Pitch sharing real-life stories and the impact of legislation or lack of action to humanize the work needed to be relevant to their ideal member/donor's life. 4. Social media is crowded. Being relatable, approachable, and genuine is how you stand out. I told her that she can directly say what we are all thinking: the mission of a nonprofit isn’t diminished by being conversational. If anything, it makes the mission more accessible to the people you want to reach by being real. What do you think? Is the nonprofit space ready to embrace a more relaxed tone on social?

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗕𝗮𝗴 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗠𝘆 𝗘𝘆𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗙𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀. I had the privilege of volunteering at Upper Room with Dunsin Oyekan at OAU, Ile-Ife. At the beginning of the program, I was given a black nylon bag and asked to pick up trash after the program. I collected the bag, without much thought ready to serve. But after the event ended, I totally forgot about my task until the lady who handed me the bag asked, “Where’s the trash you collected?” I told her I hadn’t seen any litter on the crusade ground. And honestly, I hadn’t noticed a single piece of trash. She then told me to bring out the nylon bag to take another look. As soon as I pulled out the bag and started looking AROUND FOR TRASH, suddenly, I saw trash everywhere. It felt like my eyes had just opened. How did I miss it before? This little moment taught me a huge lesson about FOCUS. What we don’t focus on, we simply don’t see. It’s a natural law. I often don’t notice the bad in people until someone else points it out because I’m not focusing on it. Focus is a powerful thing. It can shape your reality in both positive and negative ways. Make it a habit to focus on the good stuff, and you’ll start seeing more of it everywhere you look. If there's one thing (~there's many~) I wished we had done more of at Social Currant this year -- it is investing in Youtube more. We worked with a number of incredible Youtube creators creating content around everything from scams on the internet to finance but we're definitely going to be doing more. Over 80% of 18-64 year olds use Youtube according to the Pew Research Center - that's more than any other platform. As we thinking about nonprofits / advocacy / impact / news investing in Youtube, here's what I would recommend: 🔍 Identify creators in your industry / adjacent industries that are creating content reaching your audience. 💜 Support those creators - fund them, help them grow their audiences so that when you partner with them on an issue focused post - they are reaching more people. Go beyond just working with them on one off collaborations to thinking about how you can help them grow their audience in a culturally relevant way. ⏳ Build campaigns in a long-term format so that creators have time to work with you, understand your work. Be patient with your partnerships and invest for the long-term. Youtube & long-form has been underutilized by the nonprofit space and we're hoping to change that.

Is influencer philanthropy the future? 🧐 MrBeast with over 240 million subscribers is a YouTube phenomenon. At just 25 years old, he is leveraging his viral platform to fund acts of jaw-dropping generosity. 🤝 Undoubtedly capturing the world’s imagination and facilitating incredible impact — the ‘Beast Philanthropy’ approach is controversial and celebrated. A thought provoking report by Rhodri Davies in the Journal of Philanthropy and Marketing which raised some interesting questions around Mr Beast’s approach... → Ethics: Do his videos empower or exploit? How do we balance agency, consent and power dynamics? → Economics: Does clickbait incentivise engagement over systemic impact? Or does it democratise giving?  → Politics: Is he a saviour filling gaps left by governments? Or is private giving no substitute for public welfare?
