Why are mental health act reforms so critical following the King’s Speech this week? 🧠 The desire for the UK government to place mental health on a par with physical health is not a new thing. Known as “parity of esteem”, calls have become louder to make this a reality despite the intention being declared by former Bills. However the NHS remains ‘under-resourced, understaffed and overstretched’ (MIND, 2024), and for anyone who has tried to get a GP appointment to discuss mental health concerns or treatment (or physical concerns for that matter), it has become alarmingly apparent just how far from this reality we are. 👧🏻👦🏽 Improving the mental health of children and young people to ensure the healthiest generation of children in history is a key component of government reform, particularly in light of the damaging effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on children’s social development. This includes 100% coverage of mental health support in schools and establishing community hubs, as well as placing young people receiving hospital treatment in age-appropriate settings. ⭐️ The 2022 proposals for change included the removal of autism and learning disability as criteria for Section 3 detention in the absence of a co-occurring mental health condition. This is important because currently, people can be detained if they have a mental disorder that warrants detention for their health, safety, or the protection of others, and includes autism and learning disabilities. Changes would ensure that people are not detained solely based on these conditions, promoting more appropriate and respectful treatment. 👥 Research has highlighted racial disparities in how the act is currently used. Statistics have shown that black peoples are 4 times more likely to be detained under the act than white people and more than 11 times more likely to be subject to a community treatment order (see Mind). Calls have been made for community treatment orders to be abolished due to evidence that they don’t in fact reduce readmissions and are used disproportionately on black people. As we continue to see mental health awareness and advocacy grow, the need for the UK government to not only act in the best interests of its people, but to tackle the shocking inadequacies in assessment, treatment and care, becomes imperative. Parity of esteem can only be achieved with sweeping changes to the NHS, and that is not something likely to happen fast. At Phronesis we feel encouraged by these announcements, however on this long and complex road to change, providing support, understanding and care for those affected remains a key priority as words are (hopefully) translated into meaningful actions. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthreform #mentalhealthact #parity #change #empathy #support #mentalhealthadvocacy
In the #KingsSpeech, the UK government just committed to reforming the Mental Health Act. We’re over the moon 🎉 This has taken years of campaigning from across the mental health sector and will make a huge difference to people's lives. But it’s not the end of our fight. There are some key things that need to be included in any reforms to make sure they reflects the voices of people with mental health problems. And we’ll keep pushing to make sure those voices are heard in the right places.
