Boring to Bold: Presentation Design Ideas for Non-Designers Imagine turning dull slides into engaging stories. Sounds tough? It's simpler than you think. 🎯 Have a Plan: Start with a clear purpose. 📖 Tell a Story: Structure your presentation with a beginning, middle, and end. 🖼️ Visual Impact: Use powerful images, not text-heavy slides. 🔤 Font Magic: Choose fonts and layouts that enhance readability. 💬 Know Your Audience: Tailor your message to resonate with them. One idea per slide keeps your message clear and compelling. Rehearse like a pro, dress to impress, and provide handouts for lasting impact. When you’re working with presentations, always try to maintain a design consistency across all the slides. ▪️For instance, ensure font type, size, and color are consistent from slide to slide. ▪️Create a visually organized and predictable structure by uniformly aligning elements such as titles, charts, and text boxes across each slide. ▪️ Ensure consistency in the use of indicators so that audiences can interpret them correctly. For instance, if red signifies danger in one context, altering this meaning on a subsequent slide can lead to potential confusion. ▪️ Maintain consistent design treatment across all slides. Say, if you use a dashed line for forecasts, the audiences will expect a similar formatting in other forecasted line graphs as well. If the line design suddenly changes , it can slow down the audience's ability to comprehend the information. The bottom line is, strict design consistency is not just about aesthetics but also a strategic choice to facilitate effective communication. Use design elements in a way that it enhances audience's understanding of the content rather than introduce unnecessary complexity.

Two truths and a lie. When I started out as a designer about 20 years ago, I realized that I approached creative work in a structured way. I wasn't much of a 'blank slate' designer, which is to say I didn't feel like I could come up with world-changing ideas out of thin air. Honestly, I thought this meant I didn't have talent. If you can't make from scratch, are you really a creative? (I now believe this to be untrue) One thing I could do really well, however, was design visual systems on which day-to-day production needs could thrive. If you need a brochure, I got you. You want a PowerPoint presentation? No problem. Eventually, I realized two key truths. 1) If you thrive in systems, you aren't alone. A lot of, if not most, designers create from some basis of inspiration. I admire the ones who don't need it; I resonate with those who do. 2) Often times, businesses are looking for folks who can get things done. They appreciate vision, but they love follow-through. Lean into what makes you great. It's a feature, not a flaw.
