Education holds the transformative power to improve the mental health and well-being of children, empowering them with personal agency and hope for the future. The Higher Education Scholarships Scheme offers vital support to disadvantaged youth, empowering them to pursue higher education and transform their futures. Designed for A/L and university students from underserved communities connected to John Keells business locations, the programme supports young individuals aged 16 to 24, enabling them to overcome barriers and continue to strive to achieve their aspirations. In partnership with Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, Keells, CCS, KFP, JKLL, and TSF, this initiative has impacted 219 students across the island. Children need a diverse range of skills to thrive. But sometimes different funders have a different focus which makes it hard for partners to work in an holistic way. So we joined forces with leading education funders to collaborate around a shared vision. Our aim? To make it easier for our partners to support children to develop a full spectrum of skills - from literacy and numeracy to creativity and social-emotional learning. These efforts, led by The Brookings Institution and International Education Funders Group (IEFG), led to this joint commitment statement, which creates opportunities for co-funding, joint research, and collective impact. Exciting developments are on the horizon as we work together for a brighter future in education.

What can Jewish supplementary education learn from early childhood Jewish education? A great deal, judging by my conversations with Orna Siegel, Executive Director of ElevatEd. ElevatEd is focused on uplifting early childhood Jewish educators and their communities and they’re doing fantastic work — they’ve grown from 5 cities to 12 cities this year. Orna and I focus on the same themes in the Jewish education space, albeit for different age groups. I left our latest meeting with the following takeaways: * ElevatEd is using proven recruitment strategies from the corporate world to bring new teachers to the field — something I believe part-time supplementary education would be wise to emulate! * It’s important to set boundaries: be clear about what’s in the program and what isn’t; where the organization has room to adjust and what’s non-negotiable. * Uplifting Jewish educators means helping them professionalize, and ElevatEd has found that includes supporting them in developing basic technological skills like computer literacy. As an added bonus, Orna is completing her doctorate at The Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) so we’re both doing research in line with our specific roles in the Jewish education community. Yet, in many communities, particularly those affected by conflict and poverty in Zamfara State, access to quality education remains a significant challenge. At HUCOMDEF, we believe that addressing these gaps is essential for fostering resilient communities and empowering individuals to break the cycle of poverty and violence. This year, we renew our commitment to promoting inclusive and equitable education for all, with a special focus on underserved communities. We call on governments, civil society, and development partners to prioritize education by investing in teachers, students, and learning environments. Together, we can ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to society. By prioritizing education, we are not only shaping individual futures but also laying the foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and inclusive world.
