Job cuts Forget work from home! The latest trend is "work from hairdressers". "Everybody brings their laptop and does their work, especially when they get their colour done." Neil Moodie, who runs a hair salon in Spitalfields, near the City of London, told the Financial Times. "I’ve had a couple of people do a Zoom meeting when they're here - with the camera on." Like many other service providers' hairdressers have had to struggle with the changes to their customers' regular habits since the pandemic. And recently, high energy prices have added to their problems. A survey by the price- comparison service Uswitch found that electricity bills can make up 40 per cent of hairdressers' costs. Now some salons are trying to attract new customers with work friendly facilities such as desks, USB ports and quiet areas for online meetings. Since 2020, the UK has seen a sharp rise in salon closures, some of which have been caused by the growing popularity of TikTok hair tutorials and DIY styling toot. However, for many people' a trip to the hairdresser has always been about more than just a haircut - hair salons can also be hubs for community and socializing. I don't care if it's a weaker product; that brand will no longer be a brand provided or used behind my chair. As a longtime stylist & salon educator in the beauty industry, I have witnessed a concerning rising trend that is reshaping the dynamics of our profession. The direct-to-consumer approach taken by some professional hair product lines is not just about convenience; it's about encroaching on the very foundation of our business - our clients. (and I’m talking beyond Ulta + Sephora aftercare—) I understand the allure of wider distribution and increased sales may be tempting for these brands, but the impact on the integrity of the salon industry is undeniable. When professional brands start targeting our clients as their direct consumers, it undermines the longstanding relationships built between stylists and their clientele. This shift in marketing strategy not only threatens the income of individual stylists but also poses a significant challenge to the sustainability of salon businesses. By bypassing traditional salon channels, these brands risk devaluing the expertise, personalized service, and professional recommendations that stylists provide to their clients. The direct competition faced by salons from the same brands they have long supported can create a sense of betrayal and erode the trust that forms the core of our industry. When a brand becomes readily available in everyday stores it dilutes the premium experience and expertise that stylists offer. It blurs the lines between professional-grade products and consumer-grade alternatives, potentially leading to confusion among clients about the value of salon services. For me, maintaining the exclusivity and quality associated with the brands I choose to work with is non-negotiable. standards I uphold behind my chair. As professionals dedicated to enhancing the beauty and confidence of our clients, it is crucial for us to recognize and address this issue. By advocating for the preservation of the stylist-client relationship and the value of professional salon services, we can work towards a future where mutual respect and collaboration between brands, stylists, and salons thrive. If a brand chooses to prioritize mass-market accessibility over the partnership with professional stylists and salons we no longer align. Why are designers so rude to candidates just for asking a few questions about the job description, even when it was already provided in the job post? - just because a candidate is applying doesn’t mean they’re desperate for the job and will do whatever you ask of them. - Even if a candidate is desperate, that doesn’t mean if they ask a question, you can just respond with, “It was given in the description.” It’s your job to clearly explain the roles and responsibilities. - Then, when you ask a clear question like, "I know but I wanted to confirm if it’s a proper sales job or styling job?" and they reply with: "This is a full-time on-site role for a Fashion Stylist at Designer. The Fashion Stylist will be responsible for customer service, wardrobe styling, sales, and effective communication. Day-to-day tasks will involve creating stylish and personalized looks for clients, providing excellent customer service, driving sales through wardrobe consultations, and ensuring seamless communication." Adding "FYI" at the end is just not cool! - Lastly, as I’ve mentioned before, this is not what a fashion stylist does! If it's a sales role, just say it’s a pure sales role and stop writing about creating stylish looks for clients, etc.! GROW UP! THERE IS A HUGE DIFFERDIFFERENT BETWEEN A FASHION STYLIST AND A FASHION CONSULTANT. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE!
