The Body Shop - the end is nigh or revival in sight? Wizz Selvey shared her thoughts with TheIndustry.fashion & TheIndustry.beauty “It’s a surprise to see The Body Shop appoint administrators so soon after it was acquired, but there may be a silver lining to the future of this iconic brand. By appointing administrators, the business will be pulled apart, assets may be sold and some of the more profitable areas of the business will be left to be focused on. We have seen this done with high-street names such as Wilko and Made.com recently, where the brands live on but under different management and ways of retailing to the customer. There could also be the opportunity to sell the brand name and IP similarly to what we saw with Paperchase and Hunter last year. The Body Shop is a heritage brand but no longer has the ‘cool’ factor it did in the 70s and 80s. When it launched, The Body Shop was way ahead of the trends and for decades afterwards, but as the market evolved and brands overtook The Body Shop, it lost its point of difference. There are now numerous brands with ethical values, and truly, all brands must have ethics and a mission as part of their business for success in the future market. Ultimately, The Body Shop needs to invest in further developing its point of difference to succeed. Remodelling the business will only take it so far. It has already been left behind in the market, customers are not engaged compared to other brands, it needs to create an emotive connection with customers again. The only way is to reposition itself in a swiftly evolving market, as well as focus on a unique customer experience that gives customers a reason to enter their shops or shop online. A lot of coverage today on the administration of The Body Shop. Whilst it’s another victim to the death of the high street, why do companies that are this institutional fail to change their approach to business and plough on as they did from incorporation? The body shop that exists today, is by and large the same business that existed during its founding years almost 50 years ago. It once stood for something, eco-defence and a more ethical/ natural approach to the cosmetic industry. However now, it’s just another store that probably gets visited by a few regulars and people looking for last minute Christmas presents and gifts. With the introduction of social media, consumers are bombarded with hundreds of alternatives with better branding, clearer messaging and a bigger community feel. It’s so important to innovate, change strategy and move with the times to survive in an ever changing and competitive landscape. Sure, it’s a shame to see a brand this old go, but you have to question why a company with such a large reach and an iconic British brand wasn’t able to adapt to the ever apparent consumer demands and shopping habits. “Innovate or die” is becoming more and more apparent. #thebodyshop #administration #innovation #innovateordie

This woman built a $110M fashion brand. And she started with $500 and a sewing machine. The company is called Aviator Nation and the founder is Paige Mycoskie. Here's how she did it 👇 → Paige starts in 2006 by re-stitching thrift store shirts. She rips them apart and remakes them with her own patterns. → People love her style and she decides to start selling them. She spends $500 to rent a booth at a beach fair and makes $8,000 in a single day. → Then she puts in a few years selling at local stores and trade shows.
