We know that systemic change is critical. I've always bristled at calls for individual climate action. More than anything, putting the onus on the individual to make the 'right choice' felt like an opportunity for corporations to cut a pretty profit on a new premium 'green' product line. And an excuse for regulators to sit back on their haunches while 'the market takes care of it.' Why guilt consumers into opting for dolphin-safe tuna...when you could simply legally require all tuna fishing to be dolphin-safe? And don't get me started on airlines' promise to offset your carbon emissions for a small additional fee. Fly guilt-free! But then I saw Hannah Jurist-Schoen's post yesterday on the latest findings out of Project Drawdown. 25%+ of the reductions needed to stay below 1.5C of climate change can be accomplished at the individual level. Compelling. Reading Drawdown's report made me realize individual action isn't just a capitalistic scheme. And even the best-laid legislation won't be successful if individuals aren't on board with making it a success. At the same time, it's important that individuals be protected from greenwashing schemes and bearing excess cost in the name of doing the right thing. Systematically degrading the purchasing power of the people who are willing to stand up for the greater good isn't a good bet for society. During one of the climate conferences last year, a guest speaker posed a thought provoking question-‘What do you imagine our world will look like in 15-30 years, or 50 years from now?’ The responses were far from optimistic, and as I wrote down my own thoughts , I realized that, at the current rate, climate change would reach its worst. Nevertheless, these little thoughts came up in my mind and that’s when the idea of this story came to life. As someone who loves to write and read stories, I wrote this in a story form of a community that I envision in 2124-not a possible one but a hopeful one.
