Social Gerontologist; Public Speaker; Community Educator; Independent Writer and Editor; Author of "Aging Sideways: Changing Our Perspectives on Getting Older"
October 9 is #AgeismAwarenessDay, and I can't think of a more inspirational reminder of the ways we can change our perspectives on getting older than this picture of Jan Golden's wonderful manifesto. And if you want to learn more about ageism, visit the American Society on Aging's website (https://lnkd.in/gJpaaukR) and check out its Ageism Fact Sheet: https://lnkd.in/gxBzhbHj. The first step in creating a world free of age discrimination is to #TalkAboutAgeism. Let's do it!
Thank you Jan for this! How we think and feel about aging can impact how long and well we live. Our perspective can impact our outcomes, and the outcomes of others, in the areas of #physicalhealth, #behavioralhealth, #cognitivehealth, and lifespan (see work of Dr. B. Levy and others for more info.). This creative work by Jan Golden with Age Friendly Vibes can help change the conversation around aging by spurring on some "aha" moments and conversations. PLUS, it brings me happiness. ❤ Placing this in my space at work is one small step I'm taking in the movement toward a world that is more #ageinclusive, #ageaware, #agepositive, #agefriendly. Life can be hard enough-let's get rid of life limiting falsehoods around aging so that we can each have the opportunity to live our fullest life, our whole life. For you, for me, for the current and future older adults, for all of us. #AgeInformed post 82: Aging tends to be so much more than what we've been taught. #AgingisLiving

Productive aging means when we age we continue to engage, contribute, and add value in all sorts of ways, which rejects the belief that when we’re old we’re passive consumers who need, and don’t generate. Now we have an entire #GenerationsJournal detailing all facets of this idea and how to go about it. Edited by Ernest Gonzales, it’s a real model for how to promote long, healthy and productive lives for everyone. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/g3tRjHG6

Effects of Aging: As the body ages, there are a number of changes that occur. How a person manages those changes can affect their entire outlook in their “golden years.” People age differently, and they think and feel differently about aging. Even though there are many challenges of aging, these can often be addressed through simple steps that improve communication and make the environment safer and easier for the older person to navigate.
