The main problem with developing SMP-capable RTOS for ARM Cortex-M processors turned out to be, that there is only a few of them. If you check how many such processors are there, you'll find just a bunch of them. Maybe some ESP32s, a few STM32s, RP2040 and that's pretty much it. Even some of these are in fact designed for AMP rather than SMP. Second core is there so you can run certified radio firmware or something like that. With such low market penetration, even the environment around it is quite poorly equipped and documented. Right now the biggest problem I have is the ability to debug code running on second core. I have managed to crash every debugger and probe I have tried so far. Sure, the design of RP2040 which I use for the development purposes is not the most standard one. I am on the verge of putting SMP support on hold, give it a feature flag which emits compile error if you try to enable it for now and move on to another features which are more important now. My hope now is the RP2350. It seems that their SMP design regarding debugging interface will be slightly different and naturally, I am also impressed by the apparently very capable RISC-V core selectable at the boot time. #rp2350 #rtos #embeddedsoftware #cmrxrtos
