Each July, we celebrate Disability Awareness Month at BECU. It's a time to raise awareness, connect, celebrate the diversity and advance opportunities for people with disabilities. Today, in partnership with our Office of Equity & Inclusion and our Achieving Disability Awareness Employee Resource Group (ADA ERG), we hosted a discussion about mental health awareness and shared space with community nonprofits NAMI, Outdoors for All Foundation, Hearing, Speech & Deaf Center (HSDC) and National MS Society. Advocates shared insights, experiences and ways we can create positive change for our colleagues, members and communities!

This Disability Pride Month, we're aiming to raise awareness of how everyday people and brands can create more accessible environments. For more personalised guidance on accessibility, visit voiceboxagency.co.uk for a free consultation. TRANSCRIPTION: All disabilities are not visible. One-sixth of the population is disabled. Of those, 80% have invisible disabilities. Whether it's sensory, emotional, psychiatric, undiagnosed physical, or neurodiversity, all disabilities should be acknowledged and celebrated. Disability is often approached through accommodations, a desire to integrate, to heal, maybe even to fix. We do not often stop to appreciate the knowledge produced by disability and to appreciate the unique pathways that develop through our experiences with disability. Disability Week is an annual community outreach event that spans from October 14th through the 17th and brings community partners and regional organizations to the University of Missouri, Kansas City campus to discuss disability and to celebrate the knowledge, creativity and innovations produced by our shared experiences. It features a standing art exhibit, performances, panel discussions, and workshops and hopes to make noise, initiate conversations and create community. All events are free, open to the public and offered in hybrid format. It works hard to embrace disability despite the constant reminders across campus, across our community, across our country, that disability is not the norm. Building awareness improves understanding. ✨ Disability Pride Month ✨ Disability Pride is celebrated in July as a result of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law on July 26, 1990. The Disability Pride Flag, initially designed in 2019 by Ann Magill, was created to encompass all disabilities. It was revised in 2021 with community input, and is now in the public domain. Within the flag, each color stripe has a meaning: ❤️ Red - physical disabilities 🧡 Gold - neurodiversity 🤍 White - invisible disabilities and disabilities that haven't yet been diagnosed 💙 Blue - emotional and psychiatric disabilities, including mental illness, anxiety, and depression 💚 Green - for sensory disabilities, including deafness, blindness, lack of smell, lack of taste, audio processing disorder, and all other sensory disabilities 🖤 The faded black background mourning and rage for victims of ableist violence and abuse. 🩶 The diagonal Bband cuts across the walls and barriers that separate the disabled from normate society, also representing light and creativity cutting through the darkness. June is Disability Pride Month! This is a time to celebrate the incredible diversity of the disability community and advocate for a world where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive. Why celebrate? People with disabilities face unique challenges in all aspects of life, including mental health. Embracing neurodiversity is crucial for creating a more inclusive and understanding environment. Here's how you can be an ally: 📚 Educate yourself: Learn about different disabilities and the challenges people with disabilities face. 💛 Practice empathy: Consider how everyday environments might create barriers for someone with a disability. How can you be more mindful in your interactions? 📢 Be an advocate: Speak out against discrimination and promote inclusive practices in your community. Disability is a vibrant part of human diversity. This month, let's celebrate the strength, resilience, and incredible talents of the disability community. #DisabilityPrideMonth #DisabilityPride #Neurodiversity #AccessibilityForAll #InclusiveMentalHealth #DisabilityIsDiversity #WATherapist #MentalHealth #Olympia #Tacoma

October is Disability Awareness Month, a time to recognize the unique experiences and resilience of people living with disabilities, including those with invisible illnesses like lupus. As someone living with lupus, I face daily challenges that may not be visible to others but significantly impact my life. Lupus can cause pain, fatigue, and other complications, but it doesn’t define who I am. It’s a reminder that disabilities come in many forms, and awareness is crucial for fostering empathy, inclusion, and understanding. This month, I’ll be sharing some of the challenges I’ve faced to help raise awareness. Let’s continue advocating for those with disabilities, visible and invisible, and work towards a more inclusive work place! #disabilityawareness #lupus #inclusion
