In the past, I used to invite my colleagues to restaurant parties. I did this for two purposes: 1) Encourage camaraderie among my co-workers and, 2) Provide potential clients for my friends in the dining and hospitality business. I no longer do this and here’s an example on why:
Person: For tonight’s party, could you send this email to the organizer?
Me (reading the email): You want them to serve you a pound of kosher caviar?
Person: The invitation that you sent me says that I could order from the kosher menu.
Me: No, it specifically says “kosher options available”. Let me clear this up for you. The purpose of this party is so the restaurant can feature their new menu items to guests. The food’s either going to be available on a self-serve table or passed around by servers. They are not going to take individual food orders.
Person: I thought you could ask your friend as a special favor to you.
Me: The party itself is already a special favor to me. This is an opportunity for you to enjoy gratis food and drink. My friend could choose not to include me and my guests. Also, your email is extremely pretentious. You’re asking for a luxury food item, and you aren’t even Jewish. You told me last week that you try to go to church every Sunday.
