Do donate here to help battle against unwarranted, unfair and inequitable stigmatization of school children in Decatur, Georgia. Those students did absolutely nothing wrong and deserve better than a cheese sandwich for lunch (while full-paying classmates receive more). Just as importantly, PLEASE write and call Georgia lawmakers (and federal ones) to insist they fund school lunches. 📢 SCHOOL LUNCHES SHOULD BE FREE!! 📢 Georgia state rep Imani Barnes DrPH(c), MSPH, RLAT introduced House Bill 510 in Feb. 2023 to use state funds to pay for free breakfast and lunch for all students (it wasn't adopted). Now, new efforts by Barnes focus on maintaining free meals for any students who qualify for reduced cost meals, a group that comprises 63.5 percent of Georgia K-12 students. Be better, Georgia General Assembly House Of Representatives. This isn't hard. Make school meals free. The benefits students receive from healthy food will far outweigh anything else the state will get from those funds. From Food Research & Action Center: -- Based on national data, economists estimate that the receipt of a free or reduced-price school lunch reduces obesity rates by at least 17 percent. -- Receiving free or reduced-price school lunches reduces poor health by at least 29 percent based on estimates using national data.

On Monday, I learned that Decatur City Schools planned to serve cheese sandwiches and milk to students with unpaid meal balances for more than three days. This practice can be embarrassing and stigmatizing for the kids, affecting their self-esteem and overall well-being. No child should ever go hungry or be subjected to unnecessary embarrassment due to the financial constraints of their parents. Every child deserves a full, nutritious meal to fuel their bodies and minds for a successful day of learning. I am a huge supporter of educators and I know that hunger can impede learning and that no teacher could ever teach through hunger. It is important that we prioritize the well-being of our kids and ensure they have access to healthy, balanced meals. I spoke with the school district’s department of nutrition and learned they have an outstanding balance of $88K and they are accepting donations. I have created a GoFundMe to pay off the balances for these kids so they don't face this stigmatization. Please consider making a donation and/or sharing this with your network. If you prefer to donate in person they are accepting checks and money orders to Decatur City Schools Department of Nutrition 125 Electric Ave. Decatur, GA 30030. https://gofund.me/a34ce446

For the month of July, our Who I Am Foundation volunteers in #Albuquerque are hosting our 11th Annual Back-to-School Supply Drive to help children in need begin the school year with all of the tools they need for academic success. With so many uncertainties about how children will return to school and what the classroom will look like, they need your help more than ever. Families with children in K-12 spent a projected $519 per child on back-to-school needs last year. For families in low-income neighborhoods, the costs are simply not realistic. Donating new school supplies to children in disadvantaged communities will make an impact on their ability to begin the school year school-ready. Items we are collecting: -Pencils -Pens -Composition Books -Combination Locks -Scientific Calculators -5-Subject Notebooks -Tissues -Hand Sanitizer -Wet Wipes -Trapper Keepers -Colored Pencils -Markers -Protractors -Paint Sets -Glue Bottles -Notebook Paper -Highlighters -Scissors -Sharpeners -Pocket Folders To donate, simply comment below and we'll have a volunteer coordinate a donation pick up!! #TeamWhoIAm_Albuquerque
