Pleased to share our new paper on the feeding habits of olive baboons in Kainji Lake National Park, Nigeria. These fascinating primates play a key role in ecotourism, but food scarcity can also lead to human conflicts with people… Our research, based on two years of field observations, provides insights for park authorities to enhance conservation efforts (particularly for native fruit trees) and underscores the need for further research on how food availability influences baboon behaviour. Baltic Gold: The Secret of Latvia's Premium Peat Moss In the heart of Latvia's vast forests and sprawling wetlands lies a secret known as "Baltic Gold"—the best quality premium peat moss in the world. The story begins with the ancient Latvians, a tribe deeply connected to nature. They discovered that the peat moss in their bogs had unique qualities: it was softer, richer in color, and excellent at retaining moisture. An elder named Mārtiņš, revered for his wisdom, realized that these qualities were due to the region's pristine environment, specific climatic conditions, and their sustainable harvesting methods. The Latvians took only small amounts of peat moss, allowing the bogs to regenerate naturally, maintaining the ecosystem's balance. Over time, Latvia's reputation for superior peat moss spread. Combining traditional knowledge with modern techniques, the industry flourished while remaining environmentally friendly. Today, gardeners and farmers worldwide cherish Latvian peat moss for its unmatched quality, nurtured by centuries of respect for nature and sustainable practices.

Our next presenter at the ISLANDS Conference 2024 was Rehema K., who did her island mobility with the University of the Aegean in Lesvos, Greece 🇬🇷 At the conference, she presented her research on Arthropods and Plants Diversity in Olive Groves. As it is in many Mediterranean regions, Olive farming is an identity in Greece. There are approximately 11 million olive trees in Lesvos covering about 75% of the total cultivated area on the island. And while Olives are among the major sources of income, olive groves contribute to the landscape and biodiversity. Ecological significance of olive groves is broad, including acting as reservoirs of biodiversity within the agriculture landscapes. However, as intensification in the agriculture sector continues including the use of pesticides, biodiversity is threatened. In this study, she explored the impact of farm management practices namely Sprayed, Cleared understorey and Undisturbed understorey and their impact on arthropods and plants diversity in the olive groves. Pitfall traps and yellow sticky traps were used to collect soil arthropods and flying insects respectively, while plant samples were collected using transect sampling. She emphasises that the exploration of similar and/or related studies is important in order to promote management practices that enhance biodiversity, improve soil health and promote productivity. Thank you Rehema for presenting your exciting research! Stay tuned and join us on this journey through our world of islands, celebrating the future of island studies and sustainability! 🏝 🌿 #islands #islanders #islandness #Lesvos #Greece #olivegroves #arthropods #sustainability #research

Last week, REN & RGI co-hosted a workshop with 40 participants from 12 countries in Porto, Portugal, uniting experts to explore approaches to Integrated Vegetation Management (IVM) 🌳 The event combined discussions on practical applications with field visits to active projects that enhance species protection 🐝, mitigate fire risks 🔥 & create benefits for local people. Day 1 featured an excursion to two remarkable sites: one showcasing how REN is supporting endangered Garrano horses by harnessing their appetite for vegetation around power lines 🐴 and the other focused on revitalising the heritage Ermelo orange with local communities 🍊. These projects #IntegrateNature by reducing forest fire risks, supporting biodiversity, and fostering long-term regional benefits through collaborations with NGOs and local municipalities. Day 2 gave participants from 21 organisations the chance to share their own work, hear about innovation in biodiversity monitoring, fire prevention and bird protection, featured helped to identify priorities for the working group in the coming year.👷🧑🏾💻 A special thanks to REN for co-hosting and to all participants for sharing their practices! “Biodiversity is the greatest promise for the future of humankind.” Carlo Petrini President of the University of Gastronomic Sciences - Pollenzo Founder of Slow Food. Without it, the foundation for human life on the planet is lost, as is the very soil on which civilizations and cultures have been shaped and formed as the result of human adaptation to the natural environment. Defending, protecting, and promoting biodiversity is therefore not simply one among a number of choices, advanced by the intellectuals of conservation or by nostalgic environmentalists: It is, rather, the only viable path forward. It is a moral duty that we, the generation that inhabits this historic moment, must take on for those who will come after us and live on this planet Earth, a planet that, today, we are trampling, hurting, and mistreating. From this point of view, the Ark of Taste (https://lnkd.in/dkGCWzCv), a global project that this book takes up in its African—and, in particular, Kenyan—context, is an initiative that seeks to create information, knowledge, and awareness about this unique heritage. Through the Ark, communities are invited to rediscover their agricultural and food heritage, in order not to lose the connection with the land that feeds us and will continue to feed us.
