HOMELESS ACCOMMODATION AVAILABLE FOR DEFENCE FORCES VETERANS ONE is currently providing 51 Beds around the country to Homeless Veterans, with plans to raise this to 80 beds over the coming years with homes in Cork, Limerick, Kildare and Louth all being planned. Speaking to the Irish Independent recently, ONE’s CEO Cormac Kirwan said “Three of the charity’s homes in Letterkenny, Athlone and Cobh, are oversubscribed. A fourth home, in Dublin, has a capacity for 35 veterans and is currently about 70% full. However, it has taken in an extra 8 residents over the past 14 months. Another 5 moved into independent living in that period.” “ONE’s services are available to ALL veterans of the Defence Forces, and our homes are available to both male and female veterans, within a safe and secure environment. From time to time, ONE will also facilitate homeless veterans from other countries living in Ireland.” “Most of our veterans have had extensive service in the Defence Forces, serving with distinction both at home and on overseas missions. However, for one reason or another, they now find themselves homeless and in need.” ONE currently provides accommodation (board and lodging) for approximately 51 veterans, who otherwise would be homeless. Our veterans contribute on a means basis towards their keep, including all the facilities that one would expect in a normal home. Military working dogs are elite #warriors, trained by the best, but what happens when it’s time to #retire? Prior to the passing of “Robby’s Law” in 2000, many MWD’s would be #euthanized once they were no longer able to #serve. This law allows previous handlers, law enforcement, and even qualified civilians to adopt these retired heroes. Almost 90% are adopted, but 10% are unable to be adopted and subsequently #euthanized because of their #aggression. After years of #combat, sniffing out IED’s, and tackling Taliban #insurgents, these old dogs are not the same playful puppies they once were. This is a great country, and we must #not #give #up on those who have fought our wars, regardless of if they have 2 legs or 4. Nonprofits like the Warrior Dog Foundation give these dogs a second chance, and we all know they’ve earned it.
