At WI-HER, we address gender equity and social inclusion (GESI)-related barriers to achieving the control and elimination of NTDs. As a consortium partner of USAID’s Act to End Neglected Tropical Diseases | East program (Act | East), we identify how gender norms and social inclusion issues shape community access and acceptance to preventive medicine for trachoma and adoption of healthy behaviors, including facial cleanliness and environmental improvements.
Since 2021, WI-HER has implemented, with Act | East and local stakeholders, community-led behavior change activities in trachoma-endemic areas of Uganda using our iDARE methodology (Identify, Design, Apply/Assess, Record, and Expand). We engage with community influencers to amplify their power and voice to promote access to, acceptance, and uptake of mass drug administration (MDA) for trachoma and proper water, sanitation, and hygiene behaviors in target communities.
From 2021 to 2023, WI-HER has supported local officials and health workers in capacitating a total of 193 influencers (120 male and 73 female) such as religious leaders and manyatta heads, who in turn engaged 902 of their fellow community members who missed MDA for trachoma. As a result of this community-led engagement, 99% of these community members have taken the preventive treatment in subsequent MDA, and local solutions have been integrated into broad MDA planning, contributing to progress toward trachoma control in Uganda.
WI-HER continues to emphasize the importance of collaborating with community members as agents of change to develop, test, and scale their own solutions to eliminate trachoma as a public health problem. This World NTD Day, WI-HER affirms that the way forward for the global community is to unite all people to act jointly toward eliminating NTDs.
