I put a lot of work into my garden early in the summer. Everything looked wonderful. Over the next month I noticed some little weeds popping up. I kept saying to myself I should take care of it, but I kept putting it off. Now, guess what? They are everywhere. I’ve been trying to clear them but it’s so much work. And it seems like they’re growing back overnight. Note to self: attend to problems as they arise, or they will spread. Then it will be infinitely harder to deal with them. That lesson applies just as well to attending to #inclusion in your organization. Someone makes an inappropriate joke; an interpersonal conflict is brewing; you’ve noticed a pattern of behavior that may be driven by bias. These are weeds. If you don’t address the issues in the moment, the offenders might feel the behavior is okay. Others might imitate it. “I guess this is what we do here.” The people affected might lose trust. “No one has my back. Why even say anything? It won’t make a difference.” Before long, you don’t just have incidents—you have a #culture. The roots will have gone deep. Weeds will have entangled with other plants. You can’t remove them without disrupting or even damaging the garden. Tend your organizational culture like a gardener. Human beings pride themselves on being social animals. But are we really living up to that title? "The idea of micro-volunteering is simple: individuals take convenient, bite-sized actions in support of a good cause and often perform their activities or service from home." Here are 3 things that I do (when I can): - Spend some time using Be My Eyes which connects blind or low-vision people with volunteers. 📲 - I try to pick up 3 pieces of litter every time I walk my dog (especially in the countryside). 🚮 - Sharing adoptable pet profiles online to help them find their forever homes. 🐶 Do you have any habits that makes a small difference? Many people will steer clear of a beehive because it makes them nervous or they don’t want to get stung, but I’ll always walk towards it. Beekeeping is one of my hobbies and passions, so I was excited to see this urban hive outside of our offices in Charlotte, NC.  The truth is that we simply wouldn't be able to survive without bees. But even more than that? As a beekeeper and leader, I’ve learned so much firsthand from these small but mighty insects.  For example, bees provide essential pollination to the planet. Similarly, workers across industries are essential to maintain a strong and sustainable economy and community. We all have our diverse strengths and collectively, they help to better the world we live in. Or did you know that as an individual contributor, one bee will produce 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in its entire lifetime? But as part of a team, a healthy hive can produce more than 50 lbs. of honey in one year. Today, this beehive reminds me that we’re more powerful when we all work together. And that’s why together, we can #MakeTheFutureWorkForEveryone.

In the small town of Sisters, Oregon, Stitchin' Post quilt shop has spent nearly 50 years building a fun community around quilting. Every summer since 1975, founder Jean Wells has hosted a huge Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show that brings together quilters from across the country. But Stitchin' Post also connects quilters online all year long. They share quilting tips and patterns on their forums and social media for fans near and far. Fans share photos of projects and ask each other questions - new friendships form over a shared love of quilts. They work hard to create spaces where quilters can "stitch" together new bonds - both online and in the real world. Here's what they focus on: 1. With some creativity, retailers can make their own communities centered around common hobbies, interests, or values. After all, people want to share experiences. Why not give them places for that?
