Founder - Athena Behavioral Health | Social Impact Entrepreneur | Nari Shakti Awardee 2024: Influential Businesswoman Driving India's Economy I Top Thought Leadership Voice- LinkedIn | Tedx Speaker I CARE HERO 2023
If money were the only reason I ran Athena Behavioral Health, I would quit. Of course, I don’t mind making money—who does? It surely motivates. But it can never replace a deeper sense of purpose. Every day, I work not for revenue, but to build something that genuinely makes an impact. I wouldn’t have it any other way. When we started Athena, from day one, I had two goals: 👉 To create a space where people can truly heal and regain hope. 👉 To ensure that purpose, not profit, drives everything we do. And you know what? We've never had to worry about funds. Not once. We’re completely bootstrapped. I’m proud to say we’re one of the few organizations that’s truly not driven by money. For me, satisfaction and purpose >>>>>>>> any financial gain. What would you do if money weren’t a concern? Share your thoughts. And do give us a follow to connect with us on our journey! #athena #mentalhealth #founder #startup

General Partner at Suncoast Ventures. Early stage healthcare VC | Health Equity & Impact, Writer, Podcaster
I'm so proud to see this coming to the forefront in Fortune Magazine. Substance addiction costs the US Healthcare system in the range of $30B per year, and the addiction and rehab center industry is a $30B industry. The numbers are astounding, and the industry is not designed to actually help people get better. Repeat customers are the best customers unfortunately, in this business as well. I'm proud to have been Chris' first check ever, back when we weren't sure what the revenue model would be, but we knew it wasn't going to be sending people back to rehab. Venture capitalists need to do better. With great power comes great responsibility. It's not the job of a next generation VC to continue to push money into a broken yet lucrative model, we can leave that stuff to the old guard. If we are as smart as we like to think we are, we should be empowering entrepreneurs and working alongside them to make things better, AND be lucrative. We can have both. Venture capitalists wanted Sober Sidekick’s founder to take his addiction recovery app in a different direction. Now he’s proving them wrong

Professional Update: I’m thrilled to share that I’m starting my next adventure in Cambridge, MA! If you know of any opportunities or you’re in Boston, let’s catch up. Five years ago, I moved to Cambridge and incubated my addiction startup InCommon at the Harvard Innovation Lab’s Venture Incubation Program. InCommon began with a mission to genuinely impact the lives of people recovering from addiction, and the vision of a market-based solution via a Public Benefit Corporation (thanks to my great friend Brett A. Hurt for introducing me to PBCs.) As the evolving vision branched into higher education, policy, and healthcare, I never would have predicted the startup journey that would catapult the son of a poor, immigrant, and single mother across the world and ultimately to grounds in Massachusetts that predate the founding of the United States. (I often tell mentees that if you ever saw the entire staircase, you’d never take the first step.) Simply put, my time at Harvard changed my life. It was an utmost honor and privilege to bring awareness of the “epidemic before the pandemic” to storied rooms that traditionally lacked representation for addiction. More importantly, I felt an even stronger conviction to make the most of my opportunity by making the world better through technology. I visited Boston’s “Methadone Mile” and connected with people like Patrick Kennedy and Obama’s drug czar, Michael Botticelli, learning how broken America’s healthcare system is, especially in addiction. The future is already here, but its benefits are not evenly distributed. I wanted to lay down roots in Boston and see how far I could go. Sadly, I made the painful but prudent choice to ice those plans and return to Texas, where I began working with the addiction treatment industry and my colleague (now faculty at Harvard Medical School) to build a conversational AI-inspired, patient-reported outcomes product. (Yes, in 2019!) I promised myself that I would return to Cambridge someday. Unfortunately, life then took a series of twists and turns, and the promise seemed less and less attainable. Nevertheless, I never lost sight of my vision. It has taken five long years of hard work, generous support, and many lucky breaks, and now I am back! I am endlessly grateful to my network, especially my MIT community for the boost that took me to the finish line. As I embark on this new chapter, I am excited to see what life looks like on the other side. So much work remains and if history is any teacher, the work only gets harder from here, but I believe that hard things are worth doing, in spite of the risk of failure. The world is wide open with new possibilities, and I cannot wait to explore them. If you know of any opportunities or you're in Boston, let's catch up!

Reporter for Behavioral Health Business. Inquisitive observer of the behavioral health industry. Lifelong learner and truth-seeker.
Facts and feelings are like water and oil. Many feel like #privateequity has taken over this or that segment of #behavioralhealth. Newly revealed facts show that about 6% to 7% of facilities in the space are owned by private equity firms, with a few states seeing much greater concentration. Far from a fast-rolling conquest. #mentalhealth #addictiontreatment https://lnkd.in/gWCTDUWK
Private Equity Owns 6.2% of Mental Health, 7.1% of Addiction Treatment Facilities

Mental health should be spoken about every day, not just today, on #WorldMentalHealthDay 🧠 That’s why within The Virgin StartUp Community we're proud to partner with Self Space, offering our community access to affordable 1-1 mental maintenance sessions. Self Space are really on a mission to debunk the stigma and make mental health support more accessible, by featuring on the high street. At Virgin StartUp, we had the pleasure of hearing from founder Chance Marshall who shared his journey of building a startup dedicated to improving others' well-being. If you’re looking for a mental break today, tune into his story on our podcast—it’s 45 minutes well spent. (popping the link below). It was also great to chat to the team at #ANDYSMANCLUB this week to hear more about the incredible support they offer all across the UK. If you don't know much about what they do, ANDYSMANCLUB run peer-to-peer support groups for men over 18 going through storms in their lives, every Monday at 7pm excluding bank holidays. Groups are free to attend with no registration required. With over 200 locations nationwide, they're really on a mission to support as many men as possible 🙌 There are some incredible support networks out there; it’s just a matter of knowing where to look. Being a founder can feel pretty isolating sometimes, with the focus always on the business rather than on yourself. Hopefully, the resources mentioned above can help ease things a bit for some of my network this week. And, if you’re looking for a community that truly understands the ups and downs of founder life, you know where to find us ❤️.

🎉 We’ve wrapped up an incredible 6-month mentorship with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) as a NIDA Challenge winner! 💡 What did we learn? 📝 Build a Target Product Profile (TPP). TPPs are often used by biopharma during research and development. Creating a software-based TPP helped us pinpoint our product must-haves, identify delighters, and quantify our value and vision. 🏥 Identify the decision-making unit. In healthcare, the end user isn’t always the buyer. Each stakeholder is incredibly complex, and it’s crucial to understand who holds the power. 🗣️ Adopt the language of your audience. Grant writing requires a new language, unlike the ones used for customers and investors. It takes time to learn a new way of communication, but it’s worth it. 🚀 We’re deeply grateful to our mentors at NIDA for their invaluable early-stage startup guidance and their teachings around mental health and substance use. Onwards and upwards! 🌟 #MentalHealth #DigitalHealth #NIDA #Entrepreneurship
