If you have a New Year resolution to make a habit of optimism (see what I did there 😉), these are two of my favorite authors and thought leaders to develop a positive, efficient, value-added lifestyle.✨ -- Simon Sinek #StartWithWhy and James Clear #AtomicHabits are two books that I consistently refer back to when I notice myself falling out of good habits and falling into bad ones or losing a bit of my optimism and sense of purpose. Much of my current personal philosophy and work ethic steam from my introductions to these two books. 📚 -- What books, podcasts, or thought leaders do you recommend for personal and professional growth?🌱 #growth #development #optimism #habits #resolutions

In the New Year, we all aspire to become better versions of ourselves. But how do we change our behavior so new habits actually stick? Well, James Clear is THE expert on habits. His book, Atomic Habits, is the #1 New York Times bestseller with over 15 million copies sold. Together, James and I break down his powerful approach to forming better habits, breaking the bad ones, and living the life we desire. Culture Change Agent * Accredited Foundation Executive Coach at BAE Systems "The ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do" (Adam Grant)
Having your presumptions proven wrong is always interesting. 🤔 Cooking dinner tonight, I reached for a podcast episode. Decided it was Simon & James, given I follow both of them. I had a bit of an eye roll though. An episode on #habits in January. 🙄 It's disappointingly predictable. I almost switched to something else. [Side note: I don't do New Year's Resolutions.] And sure enough, the first section was on habits. Standard interview stuff. Then... Simon asked James, "What next?" And there was something in James tone that changed, almost a sense of unease or unrest. Not only that, at one point James said "Can I ask you a question?" There was vulnerability, real curiosity, and respect in the way he asked, and the session moved from interviewing to mentoring. Simon wasn't directing James, but he was relaying his personal experience & perspective. There was another break point, and the discussion shifted again. Simon moved from mentoring to coaching as he embarked on his 'Why' exercises. And James' energy changed again... he was now passionate and excitedly answering Simon's questions. Simon was able to feed back this change in James. Of the 3 parts, the first & third will have been well planned. But the middle section didn't feel like that. Yet it was the middle part, triggered by "What next?" that completely changed the direction of the conversation. And so the coaching section at the end became so much more valuable. I wonder if James will look back at this conversation and identify it as a key moment for him. 🤔 #mentoring #coaching #presumptions

This book is a great way to start the year! I like his advice to view our tasks as opportunities and not duties, highlighting the benefits of reframing our mind and making that habit more attractive
