Less than 2% of humanitarian aid goes to local NGOs. This means that when you put your hard earned cash into the donation box at the supermarket, a full 98% of that money will be swallowed up by bodies like large international charities, who dictate how that money is spent. The thing is, even the international charities believe this inequity is wrong. And so, along with the UN and a number of countries, they created the Grand Bargain: Agenda for Humanity. One of the key goals of the Grand Bargain was to increase spending to local organisations on the ground to the ambitious target of 25% by 2020. But by 2020, the proportion of direct funding to local organisations was a paltry 4%. In 2021, it halved to 2%. What is it that structurally blocks the flow of resources to those arguably best equipped to help? Why is it that, in the charity space, those who have power continue to wield more? WHY MEDAIR? Our humanitarian assistance directly benefits more than 4 million people a year. From our Swiss headquarters, we deploy international staff to crisis-affected countries, who advise and work alongside national staff to deliver aid where it’s needed most. At Embrace, we believe in helping every vulnerable baby impacted by humanitarian crises. Babies are the most innocent and vulnerable victims of conflict.  In Gaza, there are an estimated 150 women giving birth every day and reports of babies being wrapped in tin foil and placed next to hot water to stay warm. The deepening humanitarian crisis in Israel and Gaza is devastating and unthinkable. Our hearts go out to all the people struggling to survive the atrocities and horrors of this and any conflict. Many Girl Scout families and volunteers are actively engaging in conversations around ways to support people struggling on the other side of the world. Girl Scouts of Western Washington stands beside our members who are putting their Girl Scouting skills into action by advocating to make our world a better place. Girl Scouts of the USA recently approved a three-month lift of our organization’s fundraising ban, allowing Girl Scouts to now raise funds to support those impacted by the war in Israel and Gaza through June 4, 2024. Girl Scouts also can elect to donate proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program to a charity or cause of their choosing. We recommend that contributions be made to charities that have been identified by Charity Navigator or CharityWatch. South Sudan is experiencing an extreme crisis because of wars, floods and droughts. Along with our partners, we are treating malnourished children, drilling and repairing water wells, supporting agriculture projects, and training health workers and water technicians. While this has helped to alleviate some of the crisis in the original IDP camps, people continue to stream into new areas and their basic human needs are not being met. While the need for our assistance increases, our need for funds to greatly expand the work also increases. One critical need is to hire doctors - surgeons to treat war wounds, perform C-sections and address other surgical emergencies. Our goal is to hire Sudanese surgeons, who are even among the refugees.
