" A cancer patient. A cancer case. Common terms, but ones that can have a great impact on patients and their mental health. By using disease-first language such as this, one can dehumanise the patient, equating them with their disease rather than referring to them as an individual. Dehumanising and stigma-laden terminology is rife in medicine, with oncology being no exception, and blame-ridden language is too often used when referring to people at risk for or who have cancer. Although not coming from a place of malice, or indeed reflective of an intentional effort to offend, these phrases are typically used as shorthand in an effort to aid communication, but the lack of empathy and awareness that accompanies the use of such language could also be linked with apathetic attitudes. The emotional impact of a cancer diagnosis, as a patient, family member, or friend, depends on an individual's own medical and personal experiences and can manifest as depression, anxiety, stress, anger, or a combination of these. Dismissive attitudes and language only further perpetuate the intense and overwhelming emotional load that comes with a cancer diagnosis. The common use of disease-centred language, such as lung cancer patient, a case of breast cancer, and metastatic patient, denigrates the patient and their individual journey by equating the individual to their disease." And part 2 of 2 on why 2013➡️2023 turned out to be an interesting Point A to Point B in my career... On Thursday, October 5-6, 2023 the National Cancer Policy Forum and American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) are convening a workshop entitled "Assessing and Advancing Progress in the Delivery of High-Quality Cancer Care" to do just that--look at the progress that has or has not been made since the issue of the influential 2013 consensus report, "Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care: Charting a New Course for a System in Crisis." (BTW, I wish I could italicize and underline the second clause in that report title...paging LinkedIn formatting team!) "A system in crisis." In 2013. And as we stare down what's left of 2023, we see #chemotherapy drug shortages, #healthcare #workforce attrition, an aging population, unhealthy behaviors, medical mistrust, and dozens of other headwinds. Despite phenomenal treatment advances, the crisis has only gotten worse. A few of my publications were included in that 2013 report. I say that not to self-congratulate but to lament that we haven't been able to do more. More to improve #quality, patient experience, #affordability, and #healthequity. To name a few. And now with my new experience as a #cancer patient and #survivor, it is somewhere between #ironic and #poetic that I was asked to share my story at the 2023 Forum. On 8/22/2023 I was blessedly 11 years cancer free. I usually don't share personal experiences here, but this is a well written article on young women and breast cancer. Being diagnosed myself and treated at age 42 (young at the time for BC) this all rings too true. Any cancer alters a life path whether career, finances, family planning, survivorship or loss. The mind/body stress of treatment along with managing a career, family, all while living in the world of the unknown is a lot to process. The transition back from treatment has its bumps too. Some of us experience survivor guilt, post treatment anxiety and fear, job loss. Also, the brain doesn't quite work as well as it did before chemo with moments of short term memory loss or searching for words during speaking. This is why I work for Medidata. I am free to share my story here. We care about patients and know the faster we move the more quickly our sponsor customers get drugs to market.
