Designed by Stallan-Brand and HAUS Collective and delivered in collaboration with our project team (CCG (Scotland) Ltd, RANKIN FRASER LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE LLP, Carbon Futures, EnviroCentre, G3 Consulting Engineers Ltd., Avison Young │ UK, Doig+Smith, and Thomas & Adamson), this next phase will create a mix of low-energy apartments and townhouses. Keeping sustainability and social impact at the heart of the development, the use of enhanced insulation and air-source heat pumps will lower energy usage, while the creation of diverse private gardens and communal spaces will improve biodiversity net gain by more than 30%. How do you balance modern living with historic renovation? For us, it's massively dependent on the property, and it's also dependent on the family's needs. So the way in which we look at that is to do a full site visit and report, and then what we do next is very much governed by that building's own story. No two old properties are the same. A lot of what we do is also governed by legislation, so making sure that your property meets current regulations is also our number one priority. Whilst we’re very sympathetic to making sure your renovation gives a nod to the past, we also know that you may want something that is completely modern within an older shell. So it really does depend on the job brief, and each project is uniquely bespoke. There needs to be a complete rethink about space and design and clustering to achieve density sustainable land use, AND community building. This use of land and construction approach as per this image is unsustainable. We need ‘shared community green space’ thinking in new developments to preserve our future.
