Surrounding myself with people of high potential, positive behaviours and great habits... Yesterday I attended The Midlands Economic Summit. A brilliant and insightful event connecting like-minded business professionals from across the Midlands to discuss economic opportunity, growth and landscape. How can we collaborate to turn the Midlands into a national and global powerhouse? As a young person who will go on to achieve my highly ambitious goals, What can I do to positively impact and influence the town, city, county and region I live and work within? What skills do I need to develop? Who do I need to add to my network and learn from? Those were the questions I was sat thinking about on my journey home yesterday. In order to answer these questions I must work hard, take action and make use of the opportunities presented to myself. To LEARN, ADAPT and OVERCOME. To continue to make mistakes, hold myself accountable and be open to development. A massive well done to Ninder Johal DL and Nachural for putting on such a fantastic event. To celebrate today's day, here are 7 things I learned about Switzerland (and the Swiss) living here for the past decade 🇨🇭 🇨🇭 🇨🇭 👇 1. Swiss don't like sole-deciders. They have 7 people in their presidency and one is elected for one year to represent the country as "Primus inter pares" or first among equals. I particularly enjoy this one. 2. Swiss are fans of discussions. We can discuss anything. Once the discussion is over, however, they somehow almost always win 🤔. 3. The voting 🤣 . Once you get your passport, you will vote on basically EVERYTHING. You get a nice brochure about every question asked so you can inform yourself on how you can vote (of course you still need to discuss it with friends, what are you, a savage??) 4. We need to speak about the 🧀 🧀 🧀 . They melt that sh*t September to April. It smells horrible but it's actually very tasty. Long live fondue! 5. It's completely normal to go in the middle of nowhere, find unguarded, unlocked fridge with stuff farmers sell with a QR code or a small jar where you can put your money and take what you want 😋 . 6. Swiss people respect the nature 🏔 . It's completely normal to see my friends admire Pilatus (the mountain around Luzern) every morning even though they were born here and see it every single day. 7. Swiss friends are very loyal friends . Forget that b*llshit about them being "cold". Takes time to get their friendship, but once you do, you are in forever 🤗 . “Zürich should be treated like Germany!” “They speak German there, right? So, surely there is no difference in how we should approach the Swiss market!” I know the Swiss nationals reading those lines are rolling their eyes right now 🤨 Here's the thing. It’s not because the world thinks that Swiss German is close enough to German that culturally the consumer behavior is similar. ⚠️ And it’s not because the Swiss German part represents 62% of Switzerland that you should treat it as one single market. ⚠️ Those are very common misconceptions, and many companies entering the Swiss market may fail because of that approach. A few days ago, I was invited by The French Swiss Chamber of Commerce and Industry to speak at their event “Learning Expédition: Discover Swiss Germany". The goal was to help the audience decipher the codes of the Swiss German business culture focusing on the theme of interculturality (while also covering other relevant topics, like real estate, HR and marketing strategies that work). 💎 It was another opportunity to showcase how the ONE Model can come handy when companies relocate or open a subsidiary in Switzerland (or anywhere in the world). This is how it can work 🔹 O – Optimize by getting to know the local culture; consider having a local sponsor or representative to help you partner with the right professionals. That might be a cost but consider it as an investment in leadership and communication, which will pay off. 🔹 N – Navigate the challenges that might come up in the least expected ways by being curious and agile, and switching on your growth mindset. 🔹 E – Empower your team and yourself to induce positive change and grow by learning how to embrace failures but also how to celebrate the smaller or bigger wins.
