A small canvas is always fun. That’s where a true test of creating places/spaces is enjoyed. There’s a beauty into how weird angles give birth to free flowing forms. Quick sketches are meant to be quick with guides and overlay of ideas helping create the finish of sketchy. Favorite part of this design is taking an engineered swale into the beauty it could become. Evolving it with soft curves, lush landscaping thriving in the directed run-off flow and becoming a softening agent for the driange channel.

I found this growing in my garden this morning. No idea what it is but it made me think of biophilic design… Ten years ago I’d never heard of biophilic design. Now it’s something that fascinates me and I think we can all benefit from at least being aware of. Put simply it is the idea of bringing outside inside, incorporating nature in all its various shapes and forms, into our properties. Why would we want to do this? Because the natural environment is our natural environment. Human beings were not designed to be stimulated by Tik Tok, to find peace of mind scrolling through Instagram or (ironically) to find feelings of deep security and safety surrounded by panic buttons and movement sensors. A lot of our deep-rooted instincts of calm, belonging and safety are stimulated by the textures, colours and patterns found in nature (until a lion jumps out of the bushes and then we’re into that whole “fight or flight” thing!) Simple changes like having plants inside and using natural products such as stone and timber are great places to start your biophilic adventure. You can also experiment with colours and patterns. The recurring patterns found in the natural world such as pinecones, the petals of a flower (or the mystery thing growing in my lawn) can be re-created on wallpaper, as well as simply creating the image of plants and trees in their entirety. I had the privilege to meet Oliver Heath several years ago, one of the early advocates for this approach to design, and many other designers are now following this path. It doesn’t have to be a total take over. Biophilic design isn’t an “either/ or” thing. It’s just something that’s useful to know about so you can start to bring elements of it into your home or workplace. A plant here, some pieces of timber or stone there… We can all benefit from a few calming stimuli in our spaces. P.S if you can identify this plant then please let me know what it is! #biophilicdesign #nature #naturalinteriors #designprinciples
