I am glad to announce the successful completion of my internship as an International Relations Research Intern at the Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR). Under the invaluable guidance of my mentor, Neelima A, I had an enriching experience that significantly enhanced my skills in research, writing, and analysis. Neelima's unwavering support was instrumental in my growth, and I am deeply grateful for her mentorship. As a graduate in International Relations, this internship provided a fantastic opportunity to dive deep into several crucial areas of the field. During my time at CPPR, I had the privilege to work on various impactful projects: - Collected information for research papers on the UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and the Asia-Africa Growth Corridor (AAGC) and its implications. - Developed podcast concept notes on topics such as "Unpacking Global South: A New Development Cooperation Agenda," "Assessing Nepal's Foreign Policy in Shifting Relations with India," and "Delving into India-UAE Economic Partnership: Exploring CEPA and BIT." - Hosted an International Relations podcast series titled "Towards Qatar’s National Vision 2030: Opportunities and Challenges for India." - Prepared sessions for the international conference on the topic "Third Japan Conference." - Prepared sessions and wrote Minutes of Meetings (MOM) for the IR Dialogue on "India's Maritime Strategy in the Western Indian Ocean Region." - Published an article on "Violation of International Humanitarian Law in the Context of the Israel and Palestine War." - Compiled weekly International Relations news updates. - Presented a biweekly presentation on "Iran-Israel Conflict and its Impact on India." CPPR provided an excellent environment for delving into International Relations. I am particularly grateful to CPPR Chairman, D Dhanuraj Sir, for his insightful discussions that broadened my understanding of various topics. The diverse backgrounds of fellow interns and mentors, ranging from law to urban mobility, fostered a multidisciplinary approach to learning and collaboration. I am immensely thankful for this opportunity and look forward to applying the insights and skills gained during my internship in my future endeavors. Before I reveal my annual objectives to you, my mentor advised me to put out my two-year goal and then count backward to present day to see whether or not I am making every effort to achieve it. Now this is exactly what I want you to do. This year, I want to become certified in the field of human resources and secure internships to gain hands-on experience. 🇫🇷🇩🇰 This January I finished my internship at the Danish embassy in Paris 🇩🇰🇫🇷 I have had the honor to intern at the Danish embassy's press and culture department in Paris from September 2023 to January 2024.   These past month have given me an insight into how cultural diplomacy works. More precisely, I have learned how a Danish cultural institution like Le Bicolore carves out a place in the vast, and highly competitive, market of cultural and artistic institutions in Paris. From digital communication on social media, to partnerships and exhibition openings, this internship has taught me many valuable lessons.   Here are my main takes: ✨On Social Media you need to be: efficient, intentional and consistent. ✨Culture and art remain crucially important as it is where curious humans meet newness with open-mindedness.  ✨Share the good and the bad with who you work with--your colleagues are here to help you grow, to help you learn. ✨You learn a lot by doing but don't underestimate what you can learn from watching.  

Case study: From student intern to OECD official How do you go from intern to fully employed in international relations? It’s not an easy path. Let’s look at an example of someone who recently managed it: Ivan Babiy joined my office as an intern in April 2022. He did a great job and our office wanted to extend his internship. However, cost of living in Paris exceeds the internship stipend (at the time it was EUR 768/month, and is now EUR 1000/month). So Ivan declined the extension offer and returned to Italy to finish his Master’s thesis. He stayed in touch with OECD contacts from his internship and found a temporary position in a different office. It paid more than being an intern, but much less than an “official” position. He also faced the costs and stress of having to find housing in Paris all over again – a big challenge. After months of hard work to prove himself in the new position and advocating for his value, Ivan was able to secure an “official” position. He’s enjoying the work and lifestyle and optimistic about his career. Barriers Ivan faced: --Attended public university that is not as well-known outside of Italy. --Financial constraints. He could not afford to be unpaid or paid below the cost of living for an extended period. When he ran out of money, he had to go home. However, as an EU citizen he did not face visa issues. --Initially, Ivan had a limited personal/professional network in Paris. It takes time and money to establish yourself, network, learn about opportunities, go through long hiring processes, etc. Ivan focused on building a strong network as quickly as possible. --Contract negotiations to secure a position: when offered the extension of the internship, Ivan knew his value and would not agree to an internship salary. He pursued other positions in the organisation that would value his skills. Factors in his success: --Initially Ivan had a hard time finding an internship due to lack of experience. During the pandemic, he started volunteering in Italy and online for global affairs associations that interested him. The skills and experiences from volunteering helped him get an internship at the Italian Embassy in Kyiv, and then that made his profile competitive for the OECD internship. --Ivan started networking early to understand how other young professionals in the OECD found their positions. He learned from the inside about the human resources processes and what kind of positions he could reasonably compete for, and he created an extensive work network. --Ivan did not give up. Even when he had to leave Paris, he maintained a positive attitude and continued to search for a position. His belief in himself helped him stay focused on his goals during difficult moments. Message from Ivan: “Know your worth and be able to explain it. And you must build your network! It is the source of advice, support and opportunities."

Typical ingredients for success in entering a career in international affairs: (These do not reflect how I think things should be. They are anecdotal and based on my personal observations.) 1. Masters degree from prominent Western policy program (such as the APSIA schools). This is less about the content of the program and more about the alumni networks and career development resources and insights that help their graduates navigate the opaque entry into careers in international policy and development. 2. Multiple internships in international organizations, NGOs, government, think tanks, etc. Typically you might start by volunteering or interning at a small, not-so-well-known organization and then build up to the more prestigious internships. 3. Passport and socioeconomic privilege. Having a passport that allows easy access to do internships in Western countries where many prestigious international organizations are headquartered. Having the economic means and/or social capital to support doing un-/underpaid internships or similar career development opportunities in very expensive cities (New York, Geneva, Washington, DC, etc.) 4. Excellent, near-native spoken and written English. Typically at least one other UN language at a high level as well. 5. Psychological resilience, social support and long-term networking. Excellent, well-qualified candidates are common in this field. Most people have a difficult path into an international relations career. You will need to be able to face a lot of rejection and keep going. You will need to believe in yourself and have support from family and friends to keep pursuing your dream despite the years of insecurity. You will need to be constantly gathering information through networking about opportunities and how to navigate the opaque entry pathways into this field.
