The third day of the round of sixteen at UEFA EURO 2024 is Monday, 1. July. Here are the two matches taking place in Germany as the second half of the year begins. 🇫🇷 FRANCE vs. BELGIUM 🇧🇪 (18.00 - DÜSSELDORF): - France finished second in Group D, with a 1-2-0 record; they started their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Austria, and the two draws were 0-0 against the Netherlands and 1-1 against Poland. Their two goals scored were an own goal against the Austrians and a penalty against the Poles. Belgium finished second in Group E with a 1-1-1 record, losing their opening match to Slovakia 0-1, defeating Romania 2-0, and then drawing Ukraine 0-0. - Les Bleus' last meeting against Belgium was in the UEFA Nations League, defeating the Red Devils by a 3-2 score. Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappé, and Theo Hernández were the goalscorers for France, while Yannick Carrasco and Romelu Lukaku got on the scoresheet for Belgium. 🇵🇹 PORTUGAL vs. SLOVENIA 🇸🇮 (21.00 - FRANKFURT): - The primetime match features Portugal and Slovenia at Deutsche Bank Park. Portugal finished their group 2-0-1, defeating Czechia 2-1 and Türkiye 3-0 before losing to a now-eliminated Georgia side by a 2-0 scoreline. Two scoreless draws, but history made at UEFA EURO 2024 as Group C comes to an end. Slovenia 🇸🇮, in their second European Championship in history, are going to the knockout stage for the very first time as they hold a tournament favourite in England 🏴 to a 0-0 result; they are certainly one of the happiest third place group finishers ever seen, as not only have they done something in football that was never done as an independent nation prior, they proved that they can compete with some of the top powerhouses in Europe both today and over the last two weeks. Denmark 🇩🇰 are also advancing to the knockouts, finishing second from the group after drawing Serbia 🇷🇸 0-0; the result also eliminates Serbia, who finish with just two points and a -1 goal difference, that one eliminating goal coming to England on the opening day. Germany vs. Denmark is now an officially confirmed round of sixteen match, as the two bordering countries will face each other on Saturday in Dortmund. England will play against the team that finishes third in Group D or E, meaning that they could face Slovenia again in the round of sixteen, or currently Slovakia - that will be decided tomorrow evening, and the match will be on Sunday. Slovenia's opponent is unknown, but it will be one of England or the team that finishes top of Group E, which would currently be Romania. #football #soccer #euro2024 #uefaeuro2024 #em2024 #denmark #danmark #serbia #srbija #србија #england #slovenia #slovenija

It is another draw at UEFA EURO 2024, the second in one day, as England 🏴 and Denmark 🇩🇰 finish their match in a one to one draw, the exact same score as it was after 90 minutes in their UEFA EURO 2020 semifinal. Harry Kane scored in that semifinal match, and he would score against the Danes at a European Championship again - this one on seventeen minutes through an excellent pass from Kyle Walker, that bounced off Andreas Christensen's legs before landing straight to the Bayern München forward. Morten Hjulmand then scored what is surely one of the best goals of the tournament with a blast from long range that went off the left post and in; Denmark played very well, outshooting England 16-12, 7-4 on target with 51 % possession, but they could not find a winning shot and neither could their opposition as the two gain one point each from this result. That said, Denmark are now competing with Slovenia and Serbia for the second direct spot in the round of sixteen, as England may have done enough to qualify for the knockouts with four points; the Danes were in a similar situation in 2021 at the last European Championship, finishing above Finland and Russia by defeating the Russians 4-1 in Copenhagen while Finland struggled against the Belgians, one of the best teams in Europe, in an 0-2 defeat. The Danes currently have the advantage as they sit in second place, with the tiebreaker currently being disciplinary points; they will play Serbia in Munich on Tuesday at 21.00 (CEST), while England faces Slovenia in Cologne at the same time. #football #soccer #euro2024 #uefaeuro2024 #em2024 #denmark #danmark #england

Here is a graph I made of every goal outside the penalty area for the first match round of UEFA EURO 2024. Some interesting facts that are worth noting that I wrote in my article on the first round (https://lnkd.in/gWWUnDH8): - Eleven were scored over 12 matches, an average of 0,92 goals from outside the area per match; these accounted for 32,36 % of the 34 total goals in the twelve matches between Friday and Tuesday. - In comparison to prior European Championships, 18 goals from outside the box were scored at UEFA EURO 2020, and 14 at UEFA EURO 2016. - As expected, the central area was the most common part of the field; 6 were scored from the central areas, 4 from the right, and 1 from the left, that being Erik Janža’s curler at the 77' mark in Slovenia’s Group C match against Denmark. - Three were the opening goals of their matches (Wirtz, Stanciu, and Provod); two were tying goals (Janža and Gakpo); four were winning ones (Aebischer, Barella, Stanciu, and Güler). - Provod’s goal that gave Czechia the lead against Portugal was the only one scored by a team that did not gain a single point from their match; Czechia lost that match 2-1, while every other team on this graph gained a point from their matches. - Germany, Romania, and Türkiye have all scored two goals, for a combined 55 % of the eleven; the Turks nearly had three, but the replays on the opening goal show that Mert Müldür’s boot was slightly inside the penalty area for his goal against Georgia - thus it does not count according to official sources. I will be posting more about the statistics of this tournament throughout the next month. Very excited to see what the second round of the group stage brings! #football #jalkapallo #uefa #uefaeuro2024 #euro2024 #em2024 #journalism #sportsjournalism #data #stats #statistics

In the 2019 Champions League final, Liverpool's Mohamed Salah scored a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur. However, VAR intervened, reviewing a potential handball by Liverpool's Sadio Mané. The Referee, reviewed the footage using VAR and he saw that the ball had accidentally brushed Mané's arm. The goal stood, and Liverpool went on to win the title. Fast-forward to the 2020 Premier League match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. Another incident happened as Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty but a VAR review showed a potential foul by Fernandes on Tottenham's Eric Dier. The referee scrutinized the replay using VAR and he saw that Fernandes had indeed committed a foul. The penalty was overturned and Tottenham was awarded a free kick. In both instances, some might say that the intervention of VAR tried to mirror God's justice which is fair, impartial and precise. With fair play as the watch word, the VAR technology was developed to ensure accuracy as much as possible. There are other instances that VAR doesn't just help the team that really needs it like in the 2022 World Cup match between France and Argentina. We saw a contentious moment when France's Ousmane Dembélé was accused of handball and VAR reviewed the incident. It came off that after examining the footage, the ball had unintentionally brushed Dembélé's arm and play continued. Just like VAR's decisions can change the outcome of a match and cut or make someone's ticket... justice is always about balance. Have a great Wednesday. #WarriorsAtHeart #UghelliRoversFC #VAR

Now that all the games of the first matchday in the UEFA EURO 2024 groups have been played, we can finalise our summary. Group D: The Netherlands won their opening match 2:1 against Poland. In the second match of the group, we saw a close battle between Austria and France. The match was hard fought, but always fair. The number of yellow cards in Austria's favour may tell a different story, but this was down to the referee's line, who could have given the French 1 or 2 more yellow cards. The game was overshadowed by the injury to Kylian Mbappe, who had an unfortunate collision with Danso's shoulder. Austria deserved a draw. Unfortunately, this result was cancelled out by an own goal. France were certainly hoping for a better performance. In any case, it remains exciting in this group, as all four teams are roughly on an equal footing. Group E: Belgium unexpectedly lost to Slovakia and are therefore already under pressure. Based on recent results, a defeat was not to be expected, as Belgium were among the favourites before the tournament. Ukraine did not live up to their own expectations and rightly lost to Romania by a clear 3:0. The Romanians' performance was exceptionally good and if they can build on this game, they will also reach the knockout round. Ukraine must improve considerably and their goalkeeper in particular should try to forget his mistakes as quickly as possible. Group F: Turkey put on a great performance and won clearly against the newcomers to the European Championship. Georgia managed to equalise in the meantime, but were otherwise unable to put up much of a fight against the Turks. The Turkish fans, who whistled loudly during the Georgian national anthem, were a negative factor before the game. This has nothing to do with fair play and a team that has reached the finals for the first time in its history deserves more recognition and respect. We saw what we expected to be a close match between Portugal and the Czech Republic. Even though there was an unpenalised foul before the winning goal, I think the victory was justified based on the final phase of the second half. It's nice to see that Portugal are no longer solely dependent on the performance of Cristiano Ronaldo. I'm looking forward to seeing how the second group match day develops and what we can conclude before the final group matches. #euro2024 #football
