1 in 3 youth and children's workers (paid or volunteer) in churches don't feel valued & almost half of churches spent less than 10% of their budget on work amongst CYF. Yet 68% of church leaders in the same survey said their church valued children, families and young people. Why is there a disconnect in how church leaders think they are showing value and how youth workers are experiencing this? What an eye-opening and insightful session💡 I should have shared this earlier. Some significant takeaways: - As CSO members or leaders, we hardly think of our contribution to the country’s economy. We are so caught up in our philanthropic work and uplifting our communities, that we rarely consider how much we contribute through job creation and utilization of locally owned products and services. - The hostility experienced between Governments and CSOs in some countries is sometimes driven by the narrative that CSOs are potential launchpads for political opposition groups. - There is a continued need to build the capacity of CSOs in generating meaningful data. Sharing impact stories is key! - African giving is broader and much more interesting than I thought ❤️ Follow EPIC-Africa for some interesting insights on the African CSO landscape.

On September 30th, we observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day is dedicated to honouring the children who never returned home, the survivors of residential schools, and their families. As we take this time to listen, reflect, and reconcile, we recognize the importance of supporting Indigenous communities on the path to healing. In recognition of this important day, RMED's offices will be closed on Monday, September 30. We invite you to read a blog post written by our CEO, Margot Cathcart, on how we can contribute to reconciliation: https://lnkd.in/g4UJNg-E.

On September 30th, we in Canada observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day dedicated to honoring the survivors of residential schools, commemorating the children who never returned home, and recognizing the enduring impacts on Indigenous communities. This day calls upon every Canadian to reflect on our painful history and the ongoing effects of these institutions, and to make commitments to truth, healing, and reconciliation. Beyond remembrance, this is a crucial call to action, a pivotal step toward addressing and correcting historical injustices. Understanding the Historical Context is imperative for meaningful engagement. Residential schools were government-sponsored religious institutions aimed at assimilating Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture. These schools forcibly removed children from their families and communities, inflicting profound trauma that has lasting consequences across generations. Learning about this history isn't just an academic exercise; it's a necessary step in acknowledging the pain and vulnerability endured by countless individuals. It also highlights why the path to reconciliation is both complex and essential. Listening to Indigenous Voices is a critical aspect of this day. The stories of survivors are pivotal in understanding the true magnitude of the tragedy. Their testimonies offer invaluable insights into the harsh realities they faced, fostering empathy and urgency for change. Supporting Indigenous authors, activists, and educators by engaging with their work helps amplify their voices and ensures their narratives are heard. When we actively listen, we validate their experiences and demonstrate our commitment to collective healing. Taking Action is another vital component of honoring this day. Awareness is just the beginning; our ultimate goal is meaningful change. Participating in local events such as educational workshops, community gatherings, or public memorials can create a broader impact. Additionally, advocating for policy changes and supporting Indigenous-led initiatives contribute to long-term improvements. Donations to organizations supporting survivors and their families, or volunteering time and resources, are direct ways to make a difference. The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is not merely a date on the calendar; it symbolizes a profound opportunity for learning, empathy, and commitment. By understanding historical contexts, listening to Indigenous voices, and taking actionable steps, we honor the past while shaping a more just and equitable future. Let's unite in transforming reflection into real change, creating a legacy of respect and reconciliation for generations to come. #TruthAndReconciliation #IndigenousPeoplesDay #HonorThePast #ActForChange #EveryChildMatters

The question of government funding of nonprofit work is parasitic to the question of right order in society. It is not a question of efficiency about meeting “unmet needs.” Is there a space for human action where interventions by the state are not a norm? Michael Novak called it the secula. If there is such a space, government intervention, even in the form of a check, is an usurpation. A unitary vision of society might be a good research project idea to examine past history. In our world today there is a need to restore right order, where the organic constitution of society recognizes and respects delineated and differentiated organs.
