🌟 Understanding the Limits of AI in Mental Health Support 🌟 In a recent piece on The Conversation Canada, Zoha Khawaja and I shed light on the use of AI-powered chatbots for mental health support. While these tools offer convenience and personalized assistance akin to cognitive behavioral therapy, they're not substitutes for professional therapy. We caution against a phenomenon called "therapeutic misconception," where users may overestimate the chatbots' capabilities and trust them as complete substitutes for human therapists. We emphasize the importance of transparent marketing, offering traditional therapy options alongside chatbots, and actively involving users in the design process to address these risks responsibly.
