Temple of Jupiter, a colossal Roman Temple, the largest of the Roman world, situated at the Baalbek complex in Heliopolis Syriaca, in modern Lebanon. The temple served as an oracle and was dedicated to Jupiter Heliopolitanus. It is not known who commissioned or designed the temple, nor exactly when it was constructed. Work probably began around 16 BC, and was nearly complete by about 60 AD. It is situated at the western end of the Great Court of Roman Heliopolis, on a broad platform of stone raised another 7m above the huge stones of the foundation, three of which are among the heaviest blocks ever used in a construction. Cultic activity had long taken place at the site; the temple presumably replaced an earlier one, possibly using the same foundation. It was the biggest temple dedicated to Jupiter in all the Roman Empire. The columns were 19.9m high with a diameter of nearly 2.5m, the biggest in the classical world. It took three centuries to create this colossal temple complex. #historyfacts #history #romanempire #roman #RomanBritain #romanbritain #community #heritage #archaeoloynews #archaeologist #archaeology #archaeological #archaeologylife #historylovers #historyinthemaking #historymatters #history #historyfacts

The celebration of the New Year on January 1st is based on the Gregorian calendar, which is a solar calendar introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in October 1582 as a reform of the Julian calendar. The Adam’s Calendar, also known as the African Stonehenge, located in Mpumalanga South Africa, refers to a ‘controversial’ archaeological site with disputed claims about its age, purpose, and alignment with astronomical events and it is important to recognize that these controversies are often rooted in historical injustices and systemic biases. African cultures have always had their own rich systems for measuring time, including various traditional calendars. The introduction of the Gregorian calendar was linked to European colonialism and missionary activities, and it became a global standard through European influence. As we continue to assert our own narratives, it will require us to challenge established norms questioning all that we know as truth. “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots” – Marcus Garvey 🟥⬛️🟩 #educationbeyondthecurriculum #afrocentrism
