In 2008, a listeriosis outbreak linked to meat from a popular food plant resulted in 57 confirmed cases and 22 deaths. What likely went wrong? 👉 Contamination during the packaging process. According to an investigator on the case, “There was an insufficient focus on food safety. Even though there was evidence of contamination on production lines producing ready-to-eat meats months before the outbreak, these trends were not being monitored to identify the recurring presence of the bacteria.” See the full investigation report here: https://lnkd.in/gVmM2iAy In the food processing industry, food processors are responsible for preventing cross-contact and contamination of food products that could result in foodborne illness. The best way to reduce contamination in food processing plants? 👉 Food safety training. Register for a food safety training course and learn how to mitigate contamination to ensure a deadly outbreak like this doesn’t happen again: https://lnkd.in/gC2UZWHJ #FoodQuality #FoodSafety #FoodSafetyandHygiene

Food safety is a critical concern as evidenced by the tragic incident where two children died due to consuming toxic noodles. This highlights the importance of stringent food safety regulations and practices. Ensuring that all food products are free from harmful substances involves proper handling, storage, and thorough testing for contaminants. Consumers should be vigilant about expiration dates, proper food preparation methods, and sourcing food from reliable suppliers. This incident underscores the necessity for continuous oversight and education to prevent foodborne illnesses and protect public health.

This year’s World Food Safety Day under the FAO/WHO theme, "Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected", is to raise awareness about what you, no matter your role, can do to be ready for the unexpected. Even when we’ve played our part, the unexpected can happen. Food safety incidents are not only caused by foodborne illness. A food incident can occur, for example, due to accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud, or natural events. They can be due to an unexpected event that can lead to contamination or cause a breakdown in food safety controls, such as drought or flooding, but even then, there’s always something that can be done to keep food safe. This is why consumers need to be more aware of food safety and nutrition issues to be prepared, even for the unexpected. BE PREPARED! #2024Worldfoodsafetyday #Preparefortheunexpected #Consumerawareness #Foodsafety
