This fantastic lesson/activity for secondary students targets many skill areas: comparing/contrasting the lives of students in the city vs suburbs, inferencing, critical thinking, and perspective-taking (to name a few!). I have been doing this with my middle and high-schoolers this week and it has sparked great discussions! We also discussed these questions: • How do you find commonality with others? • How would you make a friend who grew up in a different environment?

I am delighted to finally share a glimpse into the powerful work of our network of partners across the country! This video highlights the perspective of some amazing humans leading and experiencing restorative justice diversion programs. In these programs, participants are invited to deeply explore a set of questions that look very different from the questions asked by the criminal legal system. Instead of focusing on what law was broken and how we punish the person that broke it, restorative justice recognizes that what is elevated as a crime is not always an accurate reflection of the harm caused or a directive on what is needed to make things right. Restorative justice starts with the questions: What happened? Who was harmed and what do they need? Whose obligation is it to repair the harm and meet those needs? Furthermore, these programs address unmet needs that may have led someone to cause harm. By asking questions like “Who else has been impacted by this harm? What are the root causes? and What is needed to address those root causes and prevent further harm?” We delve into the restorative justice process, aiming not only to repair harm but also to sow transformative seeds that lead to deeper relationships and meaningful accountability. Special shout-out to our partners that helped to collaborate and share their voices for the making of this video: Youth Art & Self-empowerment Project Community Works West Raphah Institute The Center for Restorative Approaches Visual Street Films

"Each of these things are important: reading, writing, teacher direction, student inquiry, etc. None of these things should cancel out any of the others. But holding them in balance within a 90-minute period is challenging. Teaching a range of skills (for decoding and spelling) and strategies (for meaningmaking), in a range of formats (whole group, small group and one-to-one), using a range of practices (read-alouds, shared reading, interactive reading, word work, guided reading, independent reading, interactive writing, shared writing, independent writing) is not only time-consuming but also requires tremendous skill in planning, execution, assessment and reflection from a knowledgeable, responsive teacher every single day." Other than the author doesn't mention the need for well stocked and well funded school & classroom libraries nor the unfortunate absence of credentialed school librarians in most public schools (insert heavy sigh), a very good article.
