Language matters! A couple of concerns related to this job posting for an Educational Assistant in Maryland. 1) The only circumstances under which a child could be restrained, according to Maryland law (this is a Maryland school), is in a crisis that involves imminent threat of serious physical harm. This is legally defined and is essentially a potentially life-threatening situation. No one should restrain a student to manage their behavior. 2) Words matter! Functional labels are problematic on many fronts. Functional labels can be stigmatizing and can lead to stereotypes related to intellectual ability. Functional labels often lead to inappropriate expectations and school placements. While we are at it, let's not use the term non-verbal, it is problematic for similar reasons. https://aasr.news/ynq #endseclusion

Schools face a desperate scramble for teachers with 264 positions still open in the capital weeks before the new term begins. The housing shortage and the cost of living crisis are cited as the main reasons for the shortage. This weekend principals said they did not expect to fill many roles before September. One said she would have to use unqualified teachers for three special needs posts. Last Friday, 264 Dublin teaching positions were unfilled on educationposts.ie, a recruitment website for all open positions in primary, post-primary, higher and further education. Of these, 134 were mainstream class teaching positions, 71 were for special education teachers and 25 for special class teachers. The remaining 34 were for language support teachers, supply teachers and general support teachers. https://lnkd.in/eUgWDiHF

When it comes to hiring teachers, there's often a tendency to prioritize professional experience, especially in high school settings. However, it's time to rethink our approach, particularly when it comes to elementary education. While seasoned high school educators bring valuable skills, the formative years of elementary schooling require a specialized touch. That's why it's crucial to take a different stance and prioritize hiring professional teachers with expertise in elementary education. By doing so, we can ensure that our youngest learners receive the tailored support and guidance they need to thrive academically and personally. Let's shift our focus to prioritize excellence in elementary education. #Education #ElementaryEducation #Hiring #Teachers #AcademicExcellence 📚
