Happy World IP Day!
Excited to celebrate under the theme ‘IP and the SDGs - Building our common future with innovation and creativity.’ #WorldIPDay2024
Intellectual property is pivotal in driving human progress by protecting and rewarding the innovative solutions that address the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. From advancing clean energy to ensuring quality education and promoting gender equity, robust intellectual property rights systems, such as the @ARIPO regional system, empower individuals and organisations to create positive change.
Our world's challenges are complex and interconnected; in the same vein, so are our solutions. Global efforts to nurture innovation and creativity are crucial for building a sustainable future that will benefit future generations.
@ARIPO stands with the global community, acknowledging and supporting the inventors, innovators, creators, and entrepreneurs who are shaping our shared future through their ingenuity supported by intellectual property rights. Together, we can turn the blueprint of the #SDGs into reality.

Great job,Sir. We too in Mauritius celebrated the World IP Day. The Mauritius Innovation and Research Council took the initiative to organize a seminar on the theme chosen for this year. Had a fruitful exchange following presentations made by foreign and local speakers.
Missed our last workshop? You can watch it now on Youtube and learn more about #Imagination, #feminism, and #storytelling. There is also a lovely meditation to access #feministfutures. Let us know what you think and how you feel about it!
#DEI 🚩 The shift away from affirmative action and concerns over legal scrutiny pose significant challenges for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
For anyone that's gotten to know me, they know how hard I've pushed towards more female representation in the #avproduction industry, so much so that I lost contracts and business over it.
That didn't stop me, however it did make me think of different ways to navigate this challenge and improve adoption rates, which brought up the need for rebranding and refocusing which might be beneficial not just for the #AV industry, which is and has been male dominated for as long as I've been alive.
So, here are some thoughts I've been ruminating on in regards to #diversityinAV, #diversity in general, #equity and #inclusion:
1. Focus on Inclusive Excellence
Shift the narrative from meeting quotas to fostering an environment where diverse talents are naturally drawn and retained. This includes creating cultures of belonging, where every individual feels valued and able to contribute fully.
2. Broaden the Definition
Move beyond race and gender to include diversity of thought, experience, and background. This can help companies and events demonstrate a commitment to diversity without focusing solely on demographics.
3. Transparency and Accountability
Instead of setting quotas, set transparent goals for creating inclusive environments. Measure progress through engagement surveys and retention rates of diverse employees.
4. Education and Training
Invest in ongoing education about unconscious bias, cultural competence, and the benefits of a diverse workforce. This helps build a more inclusive culture from the ground up.
Ps: Have a listen to one of my talks on this topic presented in front of the #ETLVegas23 crowd:

5. Partnerships
Collaborate with organizations that support underrepresented groups in the professional world. This can help in creating a more diverse talent pipeline without relying on quotas.
6. Innovative Recruitment
Utilize recruitment strategies that reduce bias, like blind applications and diverse hiring panels.
7. New Terminology
Instead of DEI, consider terms like "Inclusive Excellence," "Unity in Diversity," or "Collective Strength." This rebranding can help shift the focus from compliance to the inherent benefits of a diverse workforce.
In all, it's about creating a culture where diversity is naturally embedded and celebrated, not just a target to hit.

We at Belva Advocates join the world in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day 2024 which is highlighting the critical importance of intellectual property (IP) in catalyzing the human innovation and creativity needed for achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Celebrated across the globe each April 26, nearly 150 events are planned in dozens of countries to mark this year’s World IP Day, which carries the theme: “IP and the SDGs: Building Our Common Future with Innovation and Creativity.”
In 2015, countries around the world committed to the 17-objective SDGs, which are a roadmap to a better future that spans the range of human activity including climate change, poverty, education and others. However, progress is faltering ahead of the 2030 deadline for reaching the SDGs, with only 15% percent of the SDGs on track.
“Throughout history, when faced with challenges, it has been human ingenuity, ideas and innovation that has allowed us to overcome and succeed. To put the SDGs back on track, we need to harness the power of intellectual property as a catalyst to unleash innovation and creativity in the service of the SDGs,” said WIPO Director General Daren Tang in a video address to mark World IP Day 2024.
