While navigating distractions, I joined an online tech event with the theme "Introduction to Niches in Tech," hosted by Raphael Obike featuring Mr. Ejim Divine as a speaker. It was impactful and packed with knowledge. Throughout the event, I nodded, took notes, and joined discussions, experiencing a powerful sense of community. It was a reassuring reminder that our journey towards self-improvement is a shared one. Mews brought a remarkable vibe to Washington, D.C. this past weekend…thank us later.😎 Our North American team has grown remarkably since December of last year, and this past weekend's meetup was a testament to that growth. It was my second meetup, and I am still amazed at how much things have blossomed. (No Cherry Blossom pun intended)🌸 🔑 A key takeaway for me was to tap more into who I am and figure out what I can dial up and tone down in efforts to work seamlessly with my team. Self-awareness is the key to embracing our strengths and weaknesses and accepting others along their journey. 💚This meetup was special because I got to experience my colleagues as they are, with no corporate jargon or quota talk. I learned what keeps them up at night, what their true passions are and what motivates them to keep going. 🫶🏾Mews creates a space for innovators, dreamers, and believers to come together and not just service others, but service ourselves as well. This meetup will hold a special place in my heart. I'm often asked my top 5 tips for a successful event, so here you go! 1: Do not have people on stage if they are not doing something. Only bring panellists or chairs up to speak and then find a graceful way to bring them back down! 2: Give people a chance to take it all in! Don't pack too much into your schedule and allow time for breaks and chatting. People need time to process, eat, use the bathroom etc. Sometimes our enthusiasm for the content makes us forget we are dealing with biological humans who have physiological needs! 3: Use as little video as possible and try to use it for dramatic effect rather than to give information. People are at a live event - they want to see real life people talking. 4: Allow panellists at least 10 minutes of time each plus q+a. They've travelled and prepared for this thing - let them make their points! 5: If you are designing an event, speak to a professional MC or events expert *early on* about your programme because once you've started booking things in, it can be often be tricky to walk them back. Exciting Announcement! Earlier this month we held our first-ever webinar called Together We Build and it was an amazing success! Because it was such a great event, we have decided to kick off a new series that will be happening weekly on Fridays at 1:00 PM EST! Every Friday, starting on May 3, we will be hosting a meetup to discuss, as a community, various topics around accessibility, independence, and assistive technology. We will also be inviting leaders from our community to lead specialized topics from time to time!
