This Independence Day we celebrate the freedom to do whatever the *&$# we want… Just kidding. That’s not what freedom is.  Freedom is not a lack of responsibility. It’s not an absence of accountability. Freedom demands responsibility.  It requires paying attention. Thinking. Being capable. Rights are bound up with duty.  Freedom is tied to discipline. Whether internal or external. Internal discipline creates freedom for us. We are free insofar as we control ourselves.  This is articulated beautifully by Viktor Frankl. Now, more than ever, you, the American individual, must decide what kind of America you want for yourself, your family, and the next generation. This November is a turning point. Although we have progressed towards a Socialist government for quite some time, the next election could place us squarely in the governance of Socialism and Communism. Each of us should decide what we want America to be like in the future. Does America have freedom? Choice? Liberty? Or does America have oppression? Governmental oversight? Restrictions? Now pick and vote for that candidate that fits your future vision. Do not listen to the incessant rhetoric you hear today. Instead THINK! Think who will employ the ideals you find valuable for yourself, your family, and America.

In this article, I explore the nuanced role of civility in our political discourse. While calls for more respectful dialogue are undoubtedly well-meaning, it's worth examining how an emphasis on decorum can sometimes unintentionally serve to maintain power imbalances and quiet important dissenting voices. Drawing on the insights of theorists like bell hooks, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and Slavoj Žižek, I consider how the norms of "polite politics" can at times obscure and perpetuate deeper injustices. If our goal is to build a society that truly values equality and justice for all, we may need to rethink some of our assumptions about what productive political discourse looks like. This could mean creating more space for marginalized communities to share their experiences, focusing on the merits of arguments over their tone, and cultivating a more contextual, historically-informed understanding of civility that recognizes how calls for "unity" can paper over real harms.
