🎯 Nailing Your “Day in the Life” Visit at a Restaurant Interview 🎯 As a manager candidate in the restaurant industry, being asked to do a “day in the life” visit is a big opportunity. It’s your chance to show more than what’s on your resume and prove that you’re the right fit for the team. Here are a few tips to make sure you shine: 1️⃣ Be Curious, Ask Questions: Show your interest by asking about everything from daily challenges to brand standards. Understanding the restaurant’s culture and operations can set you apart. 2️⃣ Engage with the Team: Interact with team members at all levels. Building rapport and showing respect for every role will demonstrate your leadership qualities and team spirit. 3️⃣ Observe and Adapt: Pay close attention to the flow of service and the restaurant’s vibe. How do the team members communicate? What’s the customer experience like? Adapt to the environment to show that you’re quick on your feet. Help as needed! 4️⃣ Demonstrate Problem-Solving Skills: If you see something that could be improved, mention it tactfully. It’s not about criticism—it’s about showcasing your problem-solving mindset. 5️⃣ Standards: Don't be afraid to pick up trash on the floor if you see it. Job Descriptions: Are They Just Wish Lists? 🤔✨ Ever come across a job description that reads like a wish list for a superhero? 💪🦸♀️ As a recruiter with over 8 years of experience, I’ve definitely seen some wild ones! One of my favorites was when a construction company decided to start a culinary company and wanted to hire their first Head Chef. Their requirements? '10 years of experience, expertise in French, Japanese, Italian, and Peruvian cuisines, a Michelin star (or two!), and ideally a background in... construction?' 🏗️🍣🥖😂 I had to laugh! It’s like searching for a chef who could also build a skyscraper! Here are a few tips for hiring managers and recruiters to avoid those "wish list" situations: 1. Focus on Essentials: Determine the must-have skills for the role and prioritize them. If a candidate meets those, they can often learn the rest. 2. Be Realistic: Understand that the perfect candidate might not exist. 3. Be open to candidates with transferable skills and a willingness to learn. 4. Consult Your Team : Involve your team in creating job descriptions to get a clearer idea of what’s actually needed and what can be trained. 5. Highlight Growth Potential: Instead of only listing qualifications, emphasize opportunities for growth and development within the role. This can attract more diverse candidates! I have a deep-seeded love for cooking… baking… grilling… all the “kitchen” things. My dad planted that seed at a very young age and taught me how to cook—and cook GOOD. Due to the fact that both of my parents had careers that required them to work holidays, there were times that the holiday feasts fell on my shoulders. Like the full Thanksgiving dinner I prepared with only a stovetop and microwave (our oven was broken that year) when I was twelve years old. My dad is a retired executive chef. He never went to culinary school or college for this, but he built up his skills over the years, so that he could go head-to-head with anyone who had. And he came out on top repeatedly. And every Soux Chef, line cook, prep, dishwasher… every vendor… every front of house… were all better for having known his leadership. My dad was a Skills-Based Hire before Skills-Based Hiring was trendy. And every restaurant he ever worked in was the better for bringing on Chef Mark. In today’s high-paced and increasingly AI-centric world, I oftentimes wonder how many Chef Marks get overlooked for those with the college degrees and certificates decorating their resumes and LinkedIn profiles. Hiring For Skills is not just a trend, folks. It is the lifeblood of a healthy and diverse workforce.
