CUTTING CORNERS: When skipping design undermines engineering excellence. I want to share a story highlighting a common pitfall I've encountered in many companies. Back in my school days, we had a technology class competition. Teams of five received five coloured pages (and no more) and had to cut out geometric shapes – circles, triangles, and squares. Each shape had a point value, and the team with the most points won. We avoided confrontation by taking one page each and acting independently despite being a team and most of us started cutting out circles without any reflection. We had good intuition as circles had the highest density of points per surface. However, cutting circles resulted in wasting paper, leaving unusable corners. The goal of the exercise was to evaluate our ability to compare different designs before creating a prototype, and we knew it. Still, every team skipped the design phase and just started cutting. Had we planned properly, we would have realized that cutting only triangles was the most valuable design. This resonates deeply with me because it mirrors a frequent issue in engineering environments: the rush for immediate and continuous results compromises quality. The design phase is often sacrificed under pressure can demoralize conscientious engineers who strive for excellence leading to lower results and quite often delays in the overall project. Also sometimes all we need is a checklist of steps to produce high-quality work. There's an old saying - "Good design is good business." 💭🔨 But as an engineer, I've learned it's not enough to just create innovative designs; we must also fight to produce them effectively. Designing revolutionary products and processes gives immense satisfaction. But true impact comes from transforming ideas into real, usable things. Production introduces entirely new challenges beyond the drawing board. We must think holistically about design for manufacturability, supplier constraints, quality control, assembly workflows and more. Cost reductions discovered on the factory floor ultimately drive adoption. Problems unearthed by production spur our most impactful design refinements. It's easy to get lost in the inspirational journey of imagining something new. Yet the toughest work begins with solving how to build it - safely, profitably and at scale. This is why the most enduring innovations don't merely emerge from talented designers. They arise from engineers committed to both the heady fight of creation and gritty fight of execution. For anyone just starting out, I'd advise immersing yourself in both the conceptual AND concrete sides of the work. There you'll gain a well-rounded skillset ready to drive real change. Wrote this piece based on numerous conversations with mechanical designers and managers. It highlights the workflow problems I hear most often, and offers some solutions. Ultimately, this is the stuff that informs how we develop HVAKR. We're providing a solution for disjointed workflows. At the very least, ask yourself some of the questions on page 2. It's a good first step in addressing workflow inefficiencies.

-Striking the Golden Triangle: Design, Manufacturability, and Cost The world of product development revolves around a delicate balance: creating a desirable design, ensuring it can be efficiently manufactured, and keeping it all within budget. These three factors – design, manufacturability and cost - are like a three legged stool. A strong product needs all three for stability and success. -Design: This is the heart and soul of the product. It defines the human experience, aesthetics, and functionality. -Manufacturability: Can your amazing design be translated into reality? Considering factors like available machinery and material limitations is crucial. -Cost: Price point is a key factor for success. Keeping production costs under control ensures your product reaches the target market. Finding the sweet spot: The key is collaboration! Early and ongoing communication between designers, engineers, and manufacturing teams is essential. -Design for Manufacturability (DFM): By understanding manufacturing constraints, designers can create products that are easier and cheaper to produce. -Value Engineering: Analyze components and features to see if there are cost-effective alternatives that maintain quality and function. By working together, we can achieve that sweet spot (The Golden Triangle). – a product that is beautiful, functional, and commercially viable.
