Happy Earth Day! What will you do to take better care of the earth? At YCSWA, we take the health of our planet very seriously. We work hard to manage waste in York County in the most environmentally safe way possible. By using waste-to-energy technology, we are saving more than 13 acres of land each year that would be used for landfilling. We also recycle as much as possible from the ash that is produced in the waste-to-energy process and, by using this process, we are reducing the need for fossil fuels for power generation. For every ton of trash processed using waste-to-energy technology, one ton of greenhouse gases are avoided. Now that we have secured our first industrial waste carbonisation site, and have commenced the relevant planning and environmental applications, we recently visited this sustainable refuse fuel (SRF) site in Lancashire to gather a comparative view of how refuse-driven fuel (RDF) is managed against our waste carbonisation plant, which minimises waste handling and processing. Our new technology, with near-to-zero emissions, is a game-changer in reducing greenhouse gases during the waste disposal process and will play a vital role in reclaiming and rehabilitating historic, problematic, landfill sites. ♻️ This week is #ZeroWasteWeek and we’ve been ‘Waste Warriors’ for many years now – including being ‘zero to landfill’ since 2008. Of course, our main aim is to prevent waste in the first place but, when that is not possible, we recycle everything we can. For all non-recyclable general waste, we process it through ‘energy from waste’ (EFW) incineration instead of sending it to landfill – which recovers the energy from the waste to generate electricity ⚡️ 💡In fact, between 1st Jan – 31st Aug 2024, 15Hatfields diverted 952kg of non-recyclable general waste to EFW incineration instead of landfill. It's official. Shred Station is the UK waste industry's first-ever lifetime carbon-neutral company. This achievement started with an idea. We wanted our customers to experience not just a shredding service that recycles 100% of their paperwork, but a service that causes minimal environmental impacts entirely. In January 2019, this idea came to life. We became an annual CarbonNeutral® certified company. Each year since then, we have maintained this certification by reducing emissions, innovating, and offsetting the rest through verified projects. Then, the idea grew. We thought bigger. We wanted every customer who has ever used our services to have the same carbon-neutral experience. In 2023, we worked with Climate Impact Partners and Nature Positive on the mammoth task of assessing our historic emissions since formation. These emissions have now been offset in line with The CarbonNeutral Protocol. So, whether you used our services once back in 2008, or regularly for the past year, we've taken care of the emissions produced in the process. We are incredibly proud to be able to give back to our customers in this way, and hope you are as pleased as we are!
