Today (Labour Day) is more than a long weekend of leisure. Today is a day that we honour the resilience and determination of workers who fought tirelessly for the rights we enjoy today. Canada's Labour Day traces its roots back to the Nine-Hour Movement of the 1870s—a pivotal struggle where workers united to demand shorter workdays and fair treatment. This movement was more than a quest for time; it was a stand against exploitation and oppression, a fight for dignity and justice. The Nine-Hour Movement inspired subsequent generations of workers, culminating in the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, one of the most significant labour actions in Canadian history. The strike was a response to post-war economic hardships, poor working conditions, and the lack of fair wages, echoing the same demands for dignity and justice that were central to the Nine-Hour Movement. Both events are milestones in Canada's labour history, highlighting the ongoing struggle for workers' rights and social justice. So today, as we enjoy this well-deserved break, let's remember those who paved the way with their courage and commitment, shaping the fairer workplaces we strive to maintain and improve. #LabourDay #WorkersRights #NineHourMovement #CanadianHistory

Immigrants are constantly faced with a myriad of barriers to employment which restrict their ability to contribute to the labor force and building the Canadian economy. When are employers going to realize that a "one size fit all" approach doesn't work? We need a more integrative approach to extract the benefits from this underutilized pool of workers.

If we want a bigger, bolder Canada, we need a better plan. While we believe that Canada’s growth strategy should be predominantly built on attracting permanent residents, we also need to more thoughtfully plan around the increasing number of temporary residents in Canada. Without the right plan in place, over reliance on temporary workers in particular can lead to labour market distortions, depress wages, and exacerbate social inequities. We were pleased to see that Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan will now include temporary residents and we are excited to participate in IRCC’s virtual town hall to offer our feedback. On one hand, there are protracted labor shortages, and on the other, productivity issues that some economists attribute to newcomers (foreign workers) filling low-wage positions. With a federal election coming in October 2025 (or potentially sooner), immigration policy is sure to feature heavily in the political discourse in the months ahead. It's a complicated and nuanced topic, and this article does well to address some of the key details. https://lnkd.in/gYXgKauZ

🚨 Big changes ahead for Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) program, starting tomorrow! 🚨 Effective September 26, 2024, the following changes will be made to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program: ✅ The Government of Canada will refuse to process Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) in the Low-Wage stream in census metropolitan areas with an unemployment rate of 6% or higher. ✅ Employers will be allowed to hire a maximum of 10% of their total workforce through the TFW Program. This maximum employment percentage will be applied to the Low-Wage stream and is a further reduction from the March 2024 reduction to 20%. ✅ The maximum duration of employment for workers hired through the Low-Wage stream will be reduced to one year (from two years). These adjustments aim to boost local employment while supporting industries with skilled labour shortages.
