I have been thinking a lot about data governance lately. Here is a small thought piece that I wanted to get off my chest. These are my recent observations extracted from the post. ----- It is my observation that today in 2024 most enterprises with data projects are pursuing data governance initiatives for the following reasons: -Risk mitigation - CISO/CIO alignment and priority, regulated industries -Collaboration and innovation, develop data products and make data more productive Data governance is an opportunity for compliance offices to align with innovation teams to pool together budgets and blend priorities to make decisions that protect and progress data initiatives. One challenge I have noticed with most enterprises today is that there are not many roles with a primary responsibility for data governance. This is almost always the case with less mature data organizations. Only when there is enough of a business or revenue driver behind it, or risk point identified by a CISO, does data governance become more of a priority. Data governance also pops up during the maturity of a data initiative such as setting up a data warehouse, data lake, and when evaluating the value of a data catalog or data sharing opportunities. If your organization has a data management practice, data governance could be thought of as the unification of organizational policy, frameworks, and tools with data operations such as integrations, lifecycle management, and ingestion. ----- What are your thoughts?
