I had a fantastic time traveling to Washington DC for our national board meeting! The highlight was our Mid-Atlantic Council's networking event, set against the sweeping views of the city. The energy and dedication in the room were truly inspiring, with everyone passionately committed to our mission of "Architect Helping Architect." We look forward to many more events with this newly formed Council. A big thanks to Steve Knight, National Treasurer / Mid-Atlantic Council Treasurer, for his unwavering commitment to our mission and organizing this event. Where you pay for food waste 🥕🗑️ 5 actions for frontrunners👇🏽 From 2% to 95% food recycled. South Koreans - also because of its culinary culture - waste more food than the global average. ➡️ The Government decided to stop this. ➡️ 2005: landfill was banned ➡️ 2013: compulsory food waste recycling was introduced, using special biodegradable bags. Today: South Korea recycles 95% of food waste. What are the keys to success? 1️⃣ Smart laws: Citizen pay a fee for the food waste each month: Costs for a four-person family: 6 USD/month. 2️⃣ Infrastructure: What went to landfill in the past, goes to special factories where the food waste is dried and turns it into animal feed, compost or biogas. 3️⃣ Waste pick up fleet: Special food waste trucks come to pick up it up from where it is produced (apartment complexes, restaurants, businesses). 4️⃣ Tech support: 6.000 automated bins equipped with scales and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) weigh food waste as it is deposited and charge residents using an ID card 5️⃣ Urban Farms: The Government supported the establishment of urban farms, that close the loop, use the compost and grow food locally. 1yI love this idea and it would be great if used as a model for all large urban areas. Although most are deciduous, adding fruit and nut trees to the mix would also provide a food source for humans and animals.
