Today, we commemorate and celebrate the final step towards freedom for more than 250,000 enslaved people in the state of Texas on June 19, 1865. Benjamin Moore and B.E.A.T., our Black Employee Business Resource Group, are committed to causes that continue to elevate Black voices and representation, and have made a donation to Black Girls Do STEM in support of these efforts. #Juneteenth

I am a bridge builder connecting capital to communities that need it most | TED Speaker • 2024 WEF Young Global Leader • Philanthropic Advisor ✨
When it comes to the Black Funding Principles, Principle 7 emphasizes the importance of preserving the Black philanthropy practice of self-reliance and mutual support. 🙌🏽🙌🏾🙌🏿 As donors, working with a philanthropic advisor can help to harness this principle to drive sustainable, community-led change. Applying this principle means honouring and amplifying the strengths within Black communities. It’s about recognizing and leveraging community know-how and resources, while also holding society accountable for ensuring equity. 💰 The key takeaway here is that communities themselves should lead the way to change. By supporting the tradition of self-reliance and mutual support, we lay the groundwork for lasting, community-driven impact. 🚀 #CommunityDriven #BlackPhilanthropy #CollaborativePhilanthropy

As I reflect on the recent Fearless Fund decision, it feels more important than ever for us to come together and create the change we want to see in our communities. Giving Circles are a powerful tool for collective action and can help us mobilize resources to make a real impact. Check out this story I wrote about a Black led Giving Circle and the next generation of Black philanthropists who are leading the way in creating lasting change.
Throughout the Community Foundation's history, many Black philanthropists have generously contributed their resources to create opportunities for others. In 2013, Todd Greene and Patrice Hickman, together with 28 friends, co-founded the Lorde Rustin Giving Circle, marking a significant milestone in collective giving. Named after Audre Lorde and Bayard Rustin, this circle has given over $250K, supporting youth of color: https://lnkd.in/gm3DsuZ2 #BlackPhilanthropyMonth

*GIA READER: BLACK AUGUST** Black Philanthropy Month (BPM) is an annual global celebration held in August to promote and encourage charitable giving and philanthropic efforts within Black communities worldwide. It was founded in 2011 by Dr. Jackie Bouvier Copeland, along with the Pan-African Women's Philanthropy Network, to shine a light on the significant contributions of Black philanthropists and to address the unique challenges and opportunities related to Black giving. This article critiques the influence of neoliberalism in the arts and culture sector, arguing that it prioritizes profit over people, perpetuates systemic inequities, and marginalizes Black and Brown communities. It calls for a radical reimagining of funding models and a commitment to reparative justice to create a more inclusive and equitable arts sector. The entrenched interests and gatekeepers within the industry make it risky to speak openly about the systemic issues and inequities, therefore, this article was submitted by an anonymous collective. I have a dream. That one day conference organisers will stop inviting Black speakers as an after thought (especially during black history month) and will be more intentional about ensuring their line up of speakers is diverse. That one day, they will be confident to have more than one person of colour on the line up and I might just get to speak with another Black speaker with the same area of expertise on the same panel! 😳😳😳 That one day BAME speakers will be paid equally for their input. That we’ll stop needing to go to ‘listening groups’ run by big charities because they’ll actually listen and do the work! It might just be a dream but one day it might come true! Probably only if I just start organising conferences myself! If you’re organising a conference, especially during Black history month. Please commit to genuinely doing better. It’s not nice being an after thought. #diversity #inclusion #tokenism #education #exclusion

Elevating Black voices - get in front of journalists! We are launching the fourth installment of our charity speed dating series aimed to amplify stories from Black communities. We are looking to select 12 charities who will get the opportunity to learn how to craft compelling stories with expert guidance from our staff as well as having the opportunity to pitch Black History Month ideas to our journalists. It follows events held earlier this year for International Women's Day, Pride and South Asian Heritage Month with Disability History Month to come. I absolutely love this initiative because it provides access to a diverse range of charities and organisations to our newsrooms - as well as supporting our journalists in covering a wider breadth of stories. If you would like to nominate a charity for the event - organised in partnership with The Media Trust - then please complete the application form. We will be shortlisting and contacting successful charities. Please note that we only have 12 slots available. Deadline for applications is Friday 13th September. https://lnkd.in/ejGR9ihH Mark Hudson Yvonne Yewande Akinwande Jess Lee

The National Reparations Network serves as a mobilizing umbrella to plan and execute a “National Reparations Rally” in Washington, DC on May 17, 2025, the 100th anniversary month of the birth of Malcolm X. The Rally’s mission is for representatives from all sectors of the Reparations ecosystem to come to Washington in unison, harmonize collective and individual efforts, align the movement’s narrative on reparations for the enslavement era and its current legacies, and demonstrate broad-based support for reparations. If you are a reparations organization, reparations ally organization, faith-based, social justice, fraternal, academic, grassroots, professional, philanthropic, corporate or other organization or entity that believes in reparations for Black people in the United States, then endorse the 2025 National Rally and help make it a success. https://lnkd.in/gXkSu3ra
