The unsung heroes of global healthcare are the FAMILY CAREGIVERS who provide INFORMAL and UNPAID assistance to individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities. 🤝 Their unwavering commitment to loved ones often goes unnoticed, yet THEIR IMPACT IS IMMEASURABLE 🌐 A recent study by Rebecca E Lacey and colleagues (THE LANCET, link in comments🧑🏻💻) shines a light on the profound impact of family caregiving on the MENTAL and PHYSICAL HEALTH of caregivers 🧠 Their research, unique in its focus on age-diverse caregiving, reveals that transitions to caregiving result in significant increases in PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS, particularly among caregivers under 50 years old. 🔄 The study emphasizes the lasting effects of this distress, highlighting the POTENTIAL INTERFERENCE WITH SOCIAL ROLES like partnerships, parenting, education, and employment 😔 Caregiving, despite its stressors, has been associated with psychological benefits, challenging the notion that it uniformly leads to declines in health 🌿 Lacey and colleagues stress the importance of RECOGNIZING and SUPPORTING caregivers in healthcare, including primary care and hospital discharge. They advocate for person-centered and family-centered care across all health settings, emphasizing the need for INCLUSIVE POLICIES in employment, paid leave, and long-term care services 🤗 As we address the challenges of an AGING POPULATION, it's crucial to understand that caregiving impacts individuals across the lifespan 👩⚕️ Moreover, the gender equity aspect cannot be ignored, as women, more likely to become caregivers, face higher risks of negative health outcomes and related economic effects without proper support. Let's RECOGNIZE, HONOR and SUPPORT the invaluable contributions of family caregivers and acknowledge their immense sacrifices. 🤲 Their dedication to the well-being of their loved ones is truly inspiring 🎖️🥇 #Caregiving #GlobalHealth #FamilyCaregivers #MentalHealth #GenderEquity #HealthcareSupport

Women Shoulder the Responsibility of Caregiving Of the 53 million Americans who were caregivers to an adult or child with a disability in 2020, more than 60% were women. Around the world, up to 81% are women, providing assistance with a range of daily activities, from meal preparation to bathing. As the population ages, there will be increased demand for caregiving, and the burden will fall disproportionately on women. According to the Commonwealth Fund’s 2023 International Health Policy Survey: 🌎 Across 10 high-income countries, including the U.S., at least one of five women acted as caregivers. 🗺️ In seven of the 10 countries, women were significantly more likely to be a caregiver than men. 👩🏼🦳 In the U.S., women who provided informal care or assistance to a family member were significantly more likely to experience high rates of stress, anxiety, and depression than men who provided care.

#Ageism and #sexism impact the quality of #healthcare and exacerbate problematic aspects of #caregiving. This overview article highlights this web of issues, including: - Women face worse health outcomes because of the combination of ageism and gender bias. For instance: “Cardiovascular disease is the top cause of mortality in women, killing one in three. But since only about 38% of cardiovascular clinical trial participants are women, female-centric data and research is lacking – as is the care that women need. After all, women who complained of symptoms consistent with heart disease were twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mental illness than men who complained of identical symptoms: an example of both the ageism and sexism that women over 65 might face. As Dr. Helton summarizes, “It’s dangerous to be dismissed”.” - Most paid and unpaid caregivers are women and our society undervalues and under-supports caregiving. “When it comes to paid caregiving, women make up 82% of home aides and 75% of healthcare practitioners and technicians who take care of elders. Women also report doing twice as much unpaid caregiving (including of children, of other family members, and of people outside the home) as men. Put another way, women collectively spend an additional 153 hours than men do providing unpaid care every year at the value of more than $625 billion annually (compared to more than $300 billion annually for men).” - We are in a healthcare crisis for everyone, with many people – including practitioners – looking for help navigating the complexity of the system. “The average doctor’s appointment, across all patient ages and genders, is only 17.4 minutes.” https://ed.gr/ehc85
