The first edition of HLTH Europe has been wrapped up earlier this week, and it was an great experience. What excites me the most is seeing so many professionals working towards the same goal—driving the necessary changes in our healthcare systems which are facing the same issues, and are under immense pressure by rising elderly population, scare healthcare staffing and available funding. Here are a few reflections and themes from my discussions with new and existing connections, as well as from some of the insightful talks during the event: 1. AI in Healthcare 🤖 AI is a major focus and a crucial tool for addressing many of the challenges we are facing including staff shortages and a bigger group of chronic ill expected to increase in the coming decades. Innovative initiatives like Huma "10x Nurse", mentioned by Dan Vahdat and the implementations done by Corti (Andreas Cleve), shows the potential of AI in alleviating this burden. 2. Evolving Reimbursement Models 💰 While the evolution of reimbursement models in digital health has been slow, it's encouraging to see progress. As Katherine Ward noted, it's been like "playing tennis without a partner." However, there's a positive outlook, with Peter Hames stating that "the time is now for radical changes in reimbursement models." 3. The Rise of Digital Biomarkers 📊 Digital biomarkers are emerging, offering improved screening, risk stratification, and treatment options. This development is promising but will require time for both development and adoption. The panel discussion led by Katie Baca-Motes highlighted some compelling examples from Ryan Field and Manuel Marina Breysse of this gradual yet impactful progress. Despite a lot of challenges ahead the future looks bright. 🔆

The proper use of computational models and AI has the potential to reshape modern biotechnology and biopharma. A recap from the MIT Sloan Healthcare & BioInnovations Conference is linked below.
Scientific Innovation and Strategic Investments @MLSC | Business Development | Innovation Commercialization
Here are some of my key takeaways from the MIT Sloan Healthcare & BioInnovations Conference at the MIT Media Lab. It was a great learning experience, particularly for someone with a background in the life sciences. The conference commenced with an insightful presentation by Dr. Robert Fields from Beth Israel Lahey Health, who shed light on the evolving landscape of U.S. healthcare and highlighted key areas where AI can be integrated. His talk underscored the importance of scaling AI-based healthcare solutions, a critical bottleneck currently hindering the rapid adoption of innovative technologies. The panel discussions were equally engaging, covering a wide range of topics, from the transformative impact of AI in healthcare to strategies aimed at enhancing financial accessibility to care. A moment that particularly resonated with me was the fireside chat with Deborah Di Sanzo of Best Buy Health, offering a compelling vision for the future of healthcare at home. The dialogue underscored the need for increased collaboration between AI experts and clinicians to ensure that technological advancements benefit patient care. Moreover, the discussions around patient data protection highlighted the ethical considerations paramount to the adoption of emerging technologies. A recurring theme from the panelists and keynote speakers was the potential of AI to significantly improve healthcare access and efficiency. Specifically, AI's role in streamlining administrative tasks for healthcare professionals presents an immediate opportunity for impact. The advice that resonated most with me was that solutions need not be complex to be effective; simplicity can often lead to significant breakthroughs. Another standout feature of the conference was the Sloan Healthcare Innovations Pitch Competition, showcasing the winners - MabLab, BridgeHealthAI (Bridge: The Health Equity Innovation Lab), and Third Coast Dynamics - and their pioneering solutions poised to shape the future of healthcare. The concluding keynote by Dr. Lisa Neff from Eli Lilly and Company, focusing on the challenges of obesity, emphasized the complexity of addressing conditions that necessitate a shift in societal perceptions. The need to increase awareness and eradicate stigma through educational campaigns was also underscored in the earlier panel discussion on 'Transitions to Over the Counter (OTC) Products.' For those at the intersection of technology and healthcare, the conference was a powerful reminder of the opportunities and responsibilities in the field. Innovation, collaboration, and ethical consideration, all geared towards improving patient care, stand out as key principles guiding the path forward. #HealthcareInnovation #MITMediaLab #AIHealthcare

Thanks for a great HLTH Europe 🇳🇱Best conference in years ⭐️ Healthtech is really taking shape as its own industry!! Across so many planned and random meets there is a succinct notion of wanting to improve healthcare, and amazing competences, energy and momentum behind it 🙌 Take aways 👏 So many great solutions are market ready now, with clinical relevant evidence to offer real benefits to patients and healthcare systems. 💵Value based care models for reimbursement and payment is seeing progress, but, it is moving slow and more health tech investors, and investment is needed, both public and private to support implementation and uptake - it takes time. It would also be wonderful to see more of all these great solutions, also flourish and succeed in Europe to benefit patients here!! 💊Pharma / Corporate MedTech X Startup can fill the gap between patient ready health tech and burning patient needs on the one hand, but a slow uptake and implementation of them in healthcare systems. It requires willingness and risk-taking tho :) 🤝 Health tech startup-partnerships is a promising avenue to combine solutions and offering to cover more broadly and holistically on the patient pathways. It is a need in a fragmented health care system and an opportunity that health tech together can provide real solutions to. 🙋♀️ Getting access to patients early and start offering tailored health tech solutions not only seems like a viable path to building evidence leading to investment and reimbursement, but a viable business model in it self. Would be great if this could be catered for within public healthcare setting also to benefit as many as possible! 🧑💻Interoperability and which data platforms that will win in the long run is still early days, and a bit chaotic, but across many other success factors for adoption, taking a stepwise approach, zoomning in on your core customers that will take the business to the next level ,and start with their needs seems viable and then scaling from there while systems and interfaces mature. 🙏Finally, thanks for inspiring and great meeting with both existing and new partners, collaborators and fellow companies, looking forward to catch up!! Thomas Cooke BSc, MBA Gavin Matthews Devika Wood, MPH Ryan Palmer Aahuti Rai Hanne Jensen Jessica Somauroo Tim Juergens Keisuke Hashimoto Lyndon Johnson Michael Watts Kinan Muhammed Brain+ And many more, until next time…
