It's an honor to have a well-experienced instrumentation engineer from Schneider Electric here. Hello, folks! I'd love to share some insights I've gained from my boss. I believe this will be beneficial for young instrumentation engineers, especially those in or aspiring to join the oil and gas industry. To be a reliable and professional engineer, you need to understand the theoretical, technical, and fundamental aspects of instrumentation. This includes being knowledgeable about field devices, electrical and pneumatic piping, wiring, and termination. Additionally, a thorough understanding of Control Philosophy, Programmable Logic Control (PLC) and Distributed Control System (DCS) is essential. A competent instrument engineer should be capable of programming control logic and emergency shutdown systems. Many of these skills and experiences are acquired through hands-on experience rather than solely in the classroom. I've observed many young engineers who are reluctant to get their hands dirty or venture into the field, relying solely on their certificates to qualify them for any job. However, this approach only hinders learning and can result in unreliable engineering practices. I've learned that the best way to become an expert instrument engineer is to first grasp the fundamentals of all field devices and their operational principles, which makes understanding PLC and DCS systems much easier. I consider myself fortunate to be in the world's largest single-train refinery (Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals), equipped with modern cutting-edge technology for control and instrumentation. Personnel who work in this field possess sound technical and practical knowledge and experience the selection. sizing and aspects of instrument design. To build more capacity in this field and in the industry at large , our team of experts have developed a course outline that provides an overview and practical approach to instrumentation, control, and automation design principles. This course is designed for those who want to learn about the IC&A field from a practical point of view and/or for those who simply want to communicate technically with IC&A personnel. It is designed to provide attendees with sufficient knowledge to move into the field of IC&A. It is applicable to technical and supervisory personnel. It is presumed that participants come from or aspiring to be in a setting or where they can apply the knowledge received. The focus is on application and integration into the process and control of upstream and midstream oil and gas facilities. The course goes beyond theory. It captured what you need to know in order to develop practical knowledge of selection, installation and commissioning of industrial instrumentation and control systems, understand the designers reasoning, and comply with industry regulations with regard to new systems. The course is taught using a combination of teaching strategies, facilitated discussions, and hands-on exercises using “real world” project examples related to facilities design. The exercises include activities that will provide each participant with a visual application of the principles and practices discussed throughout the course.

What are the main phases of Instrumentation and Control project in Oil and Gas EPC ? ✅Instrumentation and Control (I&C) plays a vital role in Oil and Gas Design and Engineering. An I&C project typically follows these main phases: 🔹Basic Engineering: This initial phase defines the overall process requirements and identifies the key parameters that need to be monitored and controlled. Engineers will specify the types of instruments needed (pressure gauges, flow meters etc.) and their locations. 🔹Detailed Engineering: Here, the specifics of the I&C system are designed. Engineers will develop Instrument Datasheets (specifying each instrument's function and technical details), Loop Diagrams (illustrating signal flow between instruments and control systems), and Cable Routing Layouts. 🔹Procurement: Based on the detailed engineering documents, the required instruments, control systems, and other equipment are procured from vendors. 🔹Construction and Installation: During this phase, the I&C equipment is installed in the field according to the design documents. This involves physical installation of instruments, control panels, and cabling. 🔹Pre-commissioning and Commissioning: Before operational startup, the I&C system undergoes rigorous testing. This ensures all instruments are functioning correctly, control loops are properly tuned, and the entire system operates as designed to meet safety and process requirements. 🔹Operation and Maintenance: Once operational, the I&C system requires ongoing monitoring, maintenance, and calibration to ensure continued safe and efficient operation.
