So Marks and Spencer have finally been given permission to demolish and replace their flagship store on Oxford Street in London, and replace the art deco building with a newly designed store. The new building will deliver one of London's greenest buildings, create thousands of new jobs and rejuvenate the capital's premier shopping district. This is the good news, but what about the wasting of embodied carbon that will result from the redevelopment? The architects argue the new build will reuse 90 per cent of the building's existing materials, including the concrete frame and portland stone elevation, but inevitably demolition will result in an existing carbon loss. I know progress is necessary, and fully understand, using a motoring analogy, that comparing an old 1970’s car to a Tesla is impossible and that each have their own value, but I can't help feeling slightly sad that a long standing iconic building will soon be no more. At least here the issues arising from redevelopment and carbon embodiment and repurposing have been fully explored and bought to the fore. #marksandspencer #carboncapture #greenfuture

The tech available to communicate architectural design has progressed to enable designers to showcase what is proposed, owners to share what they have envisaged, and users to anticipate what is coming. Stakeholders in the AEC industry can either embrace the power of a medium such as video and AI and stand out among the rest, or continue to do what they have always done. A simple choice.

Matchbox 1&2 Completion and what happened to the Grand Designs TV show? The external and internal areas of the house are now complete with the landscaping due to take shape over the summer. These two properties were a learning curve to work on and were at the very start of Knotwood UK journey in 2021. They showcase how Knotwood's profiles can be used to great effect to achieve something which is architecturally very impressive. The Teak Brown PPC wood grain finish is a great match for the design intent and looks amazing in person. What happened to the TV series then? These buildings were designed by B+C Architects who are based in East Grinstead in 2018 and the initial plan was that the architect would take the three bed property with a friend purchasing the two bed house with a local developer funding the project. Filming took place at multiple touch points like design interviews, site clearing, steels going up and building the tv show around the architect and his family. Over the course of the design and build stage stretching over 6 years there was a change in circumstance and the architect no longer required the three bed property. It was then the developer who took over the build and didn't want to proceed with the TV series. Personally as a fan of the show this was disappointing but it is understandable and as anyone who has watched the show realises, the TV show homes do not always go as planned. On reflection I feel very proud to have been part of Matchbox 1&2 and to have learnt a great deal about how Knotwood's profiles can be used on residential projects. It might not have been Knotwood's turn to showcase the product on national TV but considering the projects that are in the pipeline this is only the start of something special. Plans have been submitted to build a 42-storey tower 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘷𝘦 a historic listed building in Birmingham. The design sees 80 Broad Street - an old orthopaedic hospital - maintained and the tower built above and around it. Examples of projects where new and old are intertwined in this way, can be seen in Australia and Canada. The developers of this proposal say it demonstrates a "distinctive and innovative approach" and allows for the retention and careful repurposing of a grade II-listed building while simultaneously creating a striking landmark tower. As always, I'm super excited about this years Superbowl! The venues of the last few years have shown off the cutting edge in modern Stadium construction. 2024 - Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas 2022 - Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles 2020 - Hard Rock Stadium in Miami 2019 - Mercedez Bank Stadium in Atlanta 2018 - U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis A common trend with the above SB locations? The use of a lightweight tensile membrane called ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) in the roof and facade. When looking at some of the perks of this ETFE versus prominent materials of older stadiums it's clear to see why. 1. Natural light - Can offer high light transmission, while also limiting solar heat gain by adding optional frit patterns or tints to the fabric. 2. Insulating - These stadium locations can get pretty hot (or cold in Minneapolis!). For indoor applications, the membrane is often inflated into giant cushions with multiple layers that can offer better U-value than double-glazing. Major keys for climate control! 3. Lightweight - ETFE foil is a fraction the weight of glass! So less structural steel. This definitely helps when implementing retracting roof systems like in Atlanta. 4. Sustainability - Besides the above 3 points, ETFE is recyclable, and expected to last 40-50 years. Also considered in LEED and Green Star certification applications for various projects including CommBank Stadium, (for which Fabritecture designed and constructed the single skin ETFE cladding). What an exciting time for sports as the designs get more and more ambitious and these materials helping to make it happen!
