Balmoral Cemetery, located in South Belfast, is a small but historically significant graveyard with deep ties to Belfast's history. ### Key Historical Aspects: 1 **Notable Burials**: Balmoral Cemetery is the final resting place of several notable figures in Belfast’s history. These include prominent businesspeople, political figures, and philanthropists from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. 2. **Small and Tucked Away**: Unlike larger cemeteries in Belfast, Balmoral Cemetery is relatively small, with its limited space contributing to its intimate atmosphere. Despite its size, it serves as a poignant reminder of Belfast’s historical narrative. 3. **Preservation Efforts**: In recent years, there have been efforts to preserve the cemetery, as it had fallen into neglect. Local historians and preservationists have worked to restore and maintain the site as part of Belfast's cultural heritage. 4. **Architectural Significance**: The headstones and monuments in Balmoral Cemetery are reflective of Victorian-era funerary architecture, with many elaborate and detailed gravestones. Due to its connection to local history and the people buried there, Balmoral Cemetery remains an important part of Belfast's heritage.

A good book, providing a social and political history of England’s governing structure during the reign of Henry VIII. The author, noted Tudor historian Alison Weir, delivers a detailed history of the entire apparatus of government surrounding the King and its contribution to the history of that era. The book is written as a chronological history of Henry VIII’s reign, with many extensive asides to cover specific aspects of the court, including its composition and structure, the annual calendar, the various legal regimes, and the importance of food and feasts. Most interesting were the discussions on architecture. Weir explains how the evolving designs of Henry’s building projects reflect the transitions in his reign. Weir shows how English domestic and foreign policy rested on a policy of grandeur, and that the Court was the prime means of executing that policy. A good reference work to accompany Weir’s many other books on the period. A great case study on how the processes and structure of a governing institution give insight into its policy goals.

I was fortunate to work on the Ford Land site what seems like ages ago. I recall some of the conversations about the restoration and how things 'found their way back' to Central Station as restoration had begun. After the years of neglect that the station went through over time the building had fallen to decay and disarray. Objects of value long removed and only the shell of its previous self remained. The historic restoration of this Detroit Monument is an outstanding example of a global company investing in the past to create a more united future. I recall a sign that said "City of Tomorrow". It was out of order, but remained among the skeletal structure once a bustling train station, surrounded by debris, limestone toned beams, cement, debris, and the dust of once was. I thought that it was ironic being in this environment among the rubble and decay. But, at the same time — that sign represented a vision that would become a reality. One that would infuse blood into the heart of a on-the-rise city that was once shaped the world we live in today. Used as an environment representing Gotham City, in Batman V Superman — it seemed apropos that Detroit, and Michigan Central Station be a cinematic representation of an environment like that. There are actually a lot of shots from Michigan Central Station in that movie (also of Detroit in general). The opening of the movie should look familiar to many Deoroiters and those that work downtown. Now a long way from that environment that worked as a character in and of itself. The stories of the station, and the centrality of this as it relates to historic stories, human events and MCS as a hub that pins some of these historic events is one of great tales of the area. I recall pitching a touchscreen project that captured the historic evolution of of Michigan Central Train station around the time the updated Ford Land site launched. I heard some of the stories during that time while working on the project. Some even since. Working with the Archived photos during the initial launch, the evolution, development and opening of the Michigan Central Station, captured on the scanned slides of yesterday. Like a time capsule exposing me to the glorious past of a city that had taken it's hits and left the station as a devolving remnant of its once glorious past, I had a glimpse of what once was — and what might become again. I wonder. What will these tales bring to the people who come through Michigan Central Station? What will the totality of those stories amount to. What narrative will be told with the MSC as a core character in these stories. Only time will tell. BUT, it's certain to capture the heart, lives and impacts of the time and add to the story that started with Ford re-igniting the ignition of this station for new generations to come. Bravo. Ford. Bravo.
The Station was shaped by the people who once traveled and worked within its corridors. Help preserve The Station’s story by sending your vintage Michigan Central Station photos to: https://lnkd.in/gGXkJiwr 📸 by Detroit Historical Society

Did you know that for over a century, an imposing building nestled on Whitehall in London was a silent witness to pivotal moments in British history? This grand structure was none other than the Old War Office, which, from 1906 to 1964, was the headquarters for officials plotting, planning, and making decisions that would shape the course of military events. Imagine walking through the corridors where influential military leaders once roamed, the walls echoing with the fervor of strategic discussions and critical wartime deliberations. This was the place from where orders were issued that would affect the lives of countless individuals during both World Wars and a host of other significant conflicts. In 1964, the baton passed from the War Office to the Ministry of Defence, which continued to use the building until 2016. It's astonishing to think about the array of secrets and stories that are etched into the very fabric of the Old War Office. From the drafting of pivotal documents to the forging of alliances that would determine the fate of nations, this historic building has seen it all. Though once only accessible to a select few, the whispers of history that linger in the Old War Office have left an indelible mark on London's rich tapestry. Can you imagine the weight of the decisions made within those walls, decisions that shaped not just the history of the United Kingdom, but the world? The Old War Office is not only an architectural marvel but a monument to the stories and legacies of those who walked its corridors. It's a testament to a bygone era of military strategy and government affairs—a true treasure trove of history! I first discussed the topic of political assassinations becoming more common in the Western world and, in particular, in the United States with Richard C. Lyons, author of The DNA of Democracy and Shadows of the Acropolis, in this broadcast from Oct. 26th, 2023. If you missed it then, give it a listen now. #politicalassassinations #politicalviolence https://lnkd.in/edysbSgT
