Boundaries are a trending topic in modern life. And as someone whose job is literally all about boundaries, it’s interesting how often I end up being the boundary between one party and another! As a Party Wall Surveyor, I often find myself balancing the expectations of multiple stakeholder. Developers, property owners, and even fellow surveyors. Each with their own priorities and concerns. It’s a role that demands patience, clear communication, and a commitment to fairness. In these cases, the coordination and back-and-forth can be extensive. While developers might expect that a single letter will do the job, neighbouring property owners often need additional documentation and reassurance. My role is to open up a dialogue, acting as a boundary between parties to ensure everyone’s rights and expectations are met, while also keeping the project on track. This work is as much about setting boundaries as it is about creating space for mutual understanding. By collaborating and maintaining transparency, I try to ensure that every party feels their interests are safeguarded. The result is a balanced agreement that helps reduce friction, protects the future of everyone’s property and builds trust between the many people involved! #PartyWallSurveying #Communication #EfficientProcesses

How to think about becoming the best Quantity Surveyor in the world... Imagine you’re looking at a football match in standard definition. You see the players, the ball, the movements…but it’s hard to pick out the details. The shifts in positioning, the way players are positioning themselves for passes, or how they anticipate the opposition's next move…all that remains blurred. Now, picture the same match, but this time in 5k high definition. Suddenly, you can see every movement, every shift in energy, every detail of strategy unfolding. You see not just the game, but the nuances that make the difference between winning and losing. In the same way, as Quantity Surveyors, most are working with a limited view…a kind of "standard definition." They see the major aspects of their job, but they miss the finer details…the patterns that emerge in how things work, how teams interact, and how systems can be optimised. A manager like Pep Guardiola doesn't just watch his team play; he sees the whole game before it even happens. He notices the intricate movements of the players, the subtle shifts in positioning, the way the opposition is reacting…all of which allows him to anticipate and adapt. This ability to see in "high-definition" is a skill that can be cultivated over time. It’s about training yourself to notice the patterns, the nuances, and the opportunities that others might overlook. By shifting your mindset from a "black-and-white" view of the world to a "5k high-definition" one, you unlock deeper insights into your work. You see the interconnectedness between tasks, the dynamics in your team, and the potential for growth that others might miss. It’s about zooming out to understand the big picture, and then zooming in to spot the critical details that drive success as a Quantity Surveyor.

This photo was taken back in 2017, five years after I graduated as a Quantity Surveyor. It was during a site valuation with the team, following a site meeting. We had a great time chatting on top of the unfinished building. Those were the days when we would walk into meetings anticipating client feedback. Looking back, those experiences shaped who we are today. The learning never stops. Every day brings new lessons – it’s up to us whether we choose to dive deeper or let the opportunity pass by. #learning #quantitysurveyor #quantitysurveying #project #construction

Land surveyors need a special training where they'll be equipped with skills to deal with being blamed on site for things that have nothing to do with them. Then they need to be hugged for being the least paid professionals on site. You quote 0.0000000000001% of the project cost and still the Project Manager will ask for a discounted rate because they didn't even bother including a Survey budget when they were budgeting for the project. Has it always been like this?
