NEW ARTICLE! DCAT Sustainability Summit to Drive Greener Solutions for Pharma and Biopharma The global bio/pharmaceutical industry is reaching a developmental junction, with the challenges of sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices playing on the minds of industry leaders. The issue is indeed a high priority for the sector, with companies formalising sustainability goals as well as adding a sustainability role at the corporate and site level, driven in part by legislation that outlines compliance requirements. Only this week, the UK government set out new draft guidelines for businesses, essentially instructing them to make fewer drugs for the sake of the environment and to meet net zero goals. Added to that, 2023’s proposed amendments to EU pharmaceutical legislation by the European Commission, it’s fair to say change is coming to the industry whether it is prepared or not. 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?🕵️♀️♻🧪 Concluding their presentation “Approaches to enhance sustainability in the pharmaceutical sector”, NIRAS's sustainability experts, Lone Gjørret and Lis Thodberg asked the audience this question at the IDA Life Science Annual Conference. Over the years, the pharmaceutical sector has made significant strides in optimizing and implementing more sustainable initiatives. This progress is largely fuelled by the industry's ambitious targets. The real question is whether there are designs and solutions that can truly propel the industry's green transition - and if so, what's needed to make it happen? 💡 Lis and Lone addressed the pressing need for the pharmaceutical industry to shift from merely undergoing transitions and working with continuous improvements to embracing full-scale transformation. Why this change is necessary and what it entails comes with a lot of questions to which we can’t claim to have all the answers, but approaches like decarbonization, setting fresh water targets, and industrial symbiosis are three initiatives that could potentially support a concrete transformation. You can learn more about NIRAS’s thoughts on e.g. decarbonisation of industrial sites and facilities in our article on the topic: https://lnkd.in/d8qMqpx5

It was great to deliver this interactive workshop with Maria Diffley. Lots of good questions and comments. While the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) introduces mandatory reporting requirements for companies, approaching it as an opportunity rather than a burden can help companies unlock strategic benefits. It encourages businesses to integrate sustainability into their core strategies, leading to enhanced value creation, stakeholder engagement, innovation, and resilience. Embracing CSRD as an integral part of business strategy, rather than just a regulatory requirement, can unlock several advantages: 1) Strategic Alignment and Value Creation Viewing CSRD beyond compliance encourages companies to integrate sustainability into their core business strategies. 2) Operational Efficiency and Innovation The process of collecting and analysing sustainability data for CSRD reporting can uncover opportunities for operational improvements and cost savings. 3) Proactive Risk Management Beyond compliance, the CSRD encourages companies to adopt a more proactive approach to identifying and managing sustainability-related risks. 4) Enhanced Stakeholder Engagement CSRD provides a framework for companies to communicate their sustainability performance and impact in a structured and transparent way. 5) Long-term Resilience and Sustainability CSRD can be a catalyst for companies to transition towards more sustainable business models that are not only better prepared to withstand future challenges but also contribute positively to societal goals. 6) Attracting Talent and Building Corporate Culture A strong commitment to sustainability, demonstrated through comprehensive reporting and strategic actions beyond mere compliance, can make companies more attractive to current and prospective employees.

The life sciences and healthcare sector are responsible for 5% of global carbon emissions, with a significant portion stemming from the production of APIs. McKinsey & Company research reveals that decarbonizing API manufacturing can cut emissions by 90% by 2040. But while many API manufacturers have set #decarbonization goals, few have concrete plans in place. Read on to learn why collaboration across the supply chain is key to achieving these targets: https://lnkd.in/gZrRMD3x by Jasmin Jessen for Sustainability Magazine
